THE MATCHUP:
Oregon State and Auburn meet for just the eighth time in program history on Friday, with the last matchup coming in 2017 when current assistant coach Kaytianna Kell (née McMillan) won the all-around event title in a road victory. The 12th-ranked Tigers are off to a fast start in 2025, finishing in second place against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 23 Nebraska and BYU during the season's opening week before winning the Lone State Collegiate Invite and beating No. 17 Arkansas.
DOMINANT:
OSU made a statement in its last meet against San Jose State, finishing with the seventh highest team score in program history during a 197.600-192.825 win in front nearly 4,900 fans at Gill Coliseum. The 197.600 was the third highest score by any in the country this entire season while the Beavs counted just one sub-9.800 and had nine different 9.900 or higher scores, which included three in just the beam rotation alone.
CAREER HIGHS:
As part of Friday's breakout performance, four different Beaver student-athletes set or tied new career highs. Sophia Esposito vaulted her way to her first event title of the season with a 9.925 while Karlie Chavez tied her career high on vault with a 9.825; Jennifer McMillan tied a career best with her 9.900 on beam while Kaitlin Garcia earned a 9.950 for her floor exercise routine to set a new personal best.
STOCK IS RISING:
When the latest Road To Nationals poll came out on Monday, Oregon State's emphatic performance resulted in a five spot jump in the rankings, and the Beavers now enter Friday's meet against Auburn at No. 9 in the rankings.
The Beavers never cracked the top 10 in 2024 but have now spent two of the first three weeks of the 2025 regular season with a single digit ranking.
BEAMING:
OSU struggled on the beam at times during the 2024 season, never ranking higher than No. 16 on that apparatus. Flash forward to 2025, and it's been the strength of the team, entering Friday's meet at Auburn ranked No. 8 in the nation, previously sitting at 10 and 12 after the first two weeks of the season. With 49.450 rotation score against SJSU, OSU is responsible for the sixth-highest single balance beam rotation score by any program this season.
+7:
The floor lineup made the biggest jump of any Beaver apparatus, using a 49.525 rotation score on Friday to crack the top 10; OSU's floor group moved up seven spots and sits at No. 9 in the rankings thanks to a rotation score that counted no lower than a 9.850 on Friday.
Led by a pair of 9.950s from Kaitlin Garcia and Jade Carey, Sage Thompson tied her career high with a 9.900 while Karlie Chavez (9.875) and Esposito (9.850) helped pave the way for OSU's highest single rotation score of the season.
ALL-AROUND:
No all-around score in the country this season has surpassed that of Jade Carey's performance against San Jose State, as the three-time Olympic medalist finished with a 39.800. Carey, who won four more event titles and is up to 129 in her career, started the meet out with a 9.900 before seeing 10s from one judge on both bars and beam to earn a 9.975 on those apparatuses; she finished the meet off with a 9.950 on floor.
With 12 completed routines in 2025, the Phoenix, Ariz., native has now seen a 9.900 or higher 11 times, which includes six 9.950+ scores, while the 39.800 was the 11th time in her illustrious collegiate career posting a 39.800 or better.
NEW NEW:
Karlie Chavez debuted a new vault against San Jose State, changing from a Yurchenko layout 1/1 to a Yurchenko 3/2 in tucked position to get a 10.0 start value. With the new vault, Chavez earned a 9.825 on Friday, tying a career high in the process with her third 9.825 as a collegiate gymnast; Chavez capped off the meet with a 9.875 on floor and now holds season averages of 9.750 on vault and 9.792 on floor.
50:
With her new career-best 9.925 on vault, Sophia Esposito won her first event title of the season (seventh career), building momentum for a meet where the sophomore would hit on all three events she competed on. With three hits, Esposito has officially surpassed 50 for her career and holds a hit rate of 94.3%.
Senior Kaitlin Garcia, who set a career high on floor, is close to 50 with 47 as a Beaver while Natalie Briones recently surpassed 50 when the Beavers defeated then-ranked No. 22 BYU on Jan. 11.
RESPONSE:
Jennifer McMillan responded in a huge way against San Jose State after a down meet against BYU. After a pair of misses against the Cougars, McMillan on Friday earned a 9.850 on bars and tied her personal best on beam – 9.900 – exactly 11 months to the day after she originally set it in a 197.100 – 196.600 victory over Stanford on Feb. 17, 2024.
UP NEXT:
The Beavers are off next week but return to Gill Coliseum for the next two meets, hosting UC Davis and Alaska on Friday, Feb. 7, before competing against Alaska and the Washington Huskies on Monday, Feb. 10.
