Oregon State Falls in Road Game at Montana
August 18, 2024 | Women's Soccer
MISSOULA, Mont. – After playing just 46 minutes in a game that was deemed 'no contest' on Thursday, the Oregon State women's soccer program returned to action on Sunday, dropping a road contest to the Montana Grizzlies, 3-0, in Missoula.
Sporting a veteran first eleven that featured two graduate students in Valerie Tobias and Ava Benedetti, it would be the Grizzlies who opened the game's scoring three minutes in. After Mya Sanchez made an acrobatic save to stop a header, Montana found a rebound opportunity that was deflected into the back of the net off an OSU defender.
The Beavers looked close to finding the leveler in the game's 19th minute after some quality pressing from McKenna Martinez. The Richland, Wash., native forced a turnover near the Grizzlies' 18-yard box and then ripped off a shot, but the attempt went wide.
Montana doubled the lead in the 35th minute but Katie Godden came close to cutting into that deficit shortly after, turning the corner from outside the box but her shot to the far post had too much power on it and missed high.
Heading into the halftime break, Montana led, 2-0.
Oregon State's attack started to create more opportunities late in the second half, led by Martinez. After drawing a foul near the edge of the 18 and missing with a shot off a direct free kick in the 76th minute, Martinez in the 78th found space near the six-yard box but pushed her shot wide.
The Grizzlies added a third right after as the game went final 3-0 in favor of the hosts.
OSU finished Sunday's game with six shots (one on goal) and took five corner kicks to the Grizzlies' three while drawing 14 fouls. In net, Sanchez finished with six saves to set a new career high.
Beaver women's soccer returns to Paul Lorenz Field on Friday, Aug. 23, hosting Canadian side Trinity Western for a 7 p.m. exhibition. The regular season resumes on Aug. 28 at Idaho State.
