Beavers Ready For Head of the Lake Regatta
October 31, 2019 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE, Wash. – Oregon State men's rowing heads north this weekend to Seattle, Washington for the 40th annual Head of the Lake Regatta.
The regatta marks the final intercollegiate races of the fall for the Beavers, after which they will finish up their fall schedule with the Orange and Black Regatta before heading into the winter. The freshmen have been key for the team through the fall race schedule, and Oregon State head coach Gabe Winkler says they will continue to be a big part of the race plans this weekend.
"The addition of the freshmen this year has made an immediate impact in the races so far," Winkler said. "A lot of (the freshmen) will be racing in the top boats this weekend."
Oregon State will be taking three 8+ boats with one entered in the Varsity event, one in the Junior Varsity event, and the third in the Third Varsity event. In addition, the Beavers will be bringing three V4+ boats that will be crewed by rowers and coxswains from the larger boats.
"We've been working hard this fall and it's time for us to show that on the racecourse," Winkler said.
The Head of the Lake is a 3-mile race starting at the College Club dock in Lake Union and will take boats through various turns in Portage Bay and Union Bay, eventually finishing in Lake Washington near the Conibear Shellhouse. According to the hosts, the best views of the races are from the University or Montlake Bridges, along the Montlake Cut, and along the shores of the Washington Arboretum.
The Varsity 8+ is set to begin the regatta at 8:00 a.m., with the JV and 3V following closely setting in at 8:04 a.m. and 8:17 a.m. respectively. All three of the 4+ boats will set off at 9:56 a.m.
