Beaver Depth Powers a Strong Finish to Fall Schedule
November 03, 2019 | Men's Rowing
Men's Rowing will finish with Orange and Black Regatta before heading into the winter
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon State men's rowing team closed out its competitive fall season at the Head of the Lake Regatta racing to a second-place finish in the Varsity 8+.
"The depth of the team showed up today with some guys stepping up in a big way," said Beaver head coach Gabe Winkler. "Every boat had a piece that performed well."
The Beavers started the day with the Varsity 8+. Coxed by Ben Garrison and crewed by Adam Montoya, Alex Carlton, Tyler Gray, Jacob Randall, Zach Niedermeyer, Jacoby Wilson, Tanner Mathews, and Max McDonald finished with a time of 15:53.128 – good for second place in the event.
The Junior Varsity boat took home a third-place finish with a final time of 16:28.381. The boat was coxed by Casey Kinaan and crewed by Ben La Fond, Hunter Rust, Cal Labonski, William La Fond, Landon Fick, Finn Peck, Nick Taylor, and Drew Keller.
Rounding out the first portion of the day for the Beavers was the Third Varsity event. The boat was coxed by Andrew Bullock and crewed by Patrick McIntee, Alex Hernandez, Alex Sitzman, Samuel Foltz, Tristan Gavin, Landen Acosta, Josh Hankin, and Patrick Wiley. The crew raced to a time of 16:40.238 and a fourth-place finish in the event.
After a break the Beavers were back on the water for the Champ Men's 4+ event with three entries. The Oregon State "A" entry, coxed by Garrison and crewed by Montoya, McDonald, Niedermeyer, and Wilson was the highest placing boat crossing the finish line in 17:44.128 and finishing in fourth place.
"Ben Garrison taking a gutsy line on the inside of the UW boat in the 4+ with a relentless push was huge for us to finish the day. He crept through them down the entire Cut so (we) had the best line around the final turn," Winkler said. "The winter training is where you go behind closed doors until the spring season. This gives us some fuel for the next few months to feed off of."
The Beavers will finish up the fall with the Orange and Black Regatta in Corvallis on Saturday November 17th. You can register for the event here.
