Shy Bats Sink Beavers Saturday Night
March 11, 2017 | Softball
FRESNO, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team finished day two of the Fresno State Invite suffering a loss in a rematch with Fresno State, 6-2 Saturday night at Margie Wright Diamond. The Beavers recorded only two hits in the first five innings of action and it was "too-little, too-late" for them to comeback.
Â
Both teams battled in the beginning innings, as neither had a hit through the first three frames. Oregon State broke the drought in the top of the fourth after Natalie Hampton knocked a single to left field before advancing to second base on a wild pitch. She eventually made her way to third, which let Sammi Noland tap a base hit to left to score her and give the Beavers a one-run lead.
Â
The Bulldogs would not let the Beavers lead long, as they rattled off four hits to score four runs, including a three-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-1 lead. Fresno State would add runs on walks in both the fifth and sixth innings to increase its lead to five.
Â
The Beavers looked to make a comeback in the seventh after Kayleen Shafer lead the inning off with a double to left field. Riley Gregoire would come pinch run and advance to third on a wild pitch before Katy McJunkin stepped in to pinch hit. The junior hit a sac fly to center to score Gregoire from third and cut the deficit to four. Oregon State went on to put runners in scoring position, but could not bring them across.
Â
Oregon State finished with five different players recording a hit, while Noland and McJunkin tallied the RBI. Nerissa Eason was tabbed with the loss as she started the game and pitched 4 2/3 inning, giving up five runs on six hits. Taylor Cotton closed the games' 1 1/3 innings recording a strikeout and allowing just one hit.
Â
Oregon State (14-7) will finish the Fresno State Invite tomorrow morning with a rematch against Sacramento State scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Beavers defeated the Hornets Saturday afternoon, 3-0.
