Beavers Grab Win in Mistake-Filled Game
March 12, 2017 | Softball
FRESNO, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team finished the Fresno State Invite on a high note, defeating Sacramento State 6-5 Sunday morning at Margie Wright Diamond. There were seven errors between the teams, which accounted for seven of the 11 runs.
Â
Oregon State started the game, charging out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning after some well executed two-out hitting. The Beavers had runners on first and second with two outs before Alyssa Pelegrin started the run. The freshman recorded a RBI single up the middle, before Jessica Garcia and McKenna Arriola both hit back-to-back RBI singles. The Beavers tried to increase their lead further in the inning after loading the bases, but left them juiced.
Â
The Hornets came back in the fourth after a mistake-filled inning by the Beavers. OSU allowed five runs to score on two hits while committing four errors. The Beavers should have been off the field in 1-2-3 fashion, but the costly mistakes prolonged the inning and allowed Sac St. to gain a 5-3 lead.
Â
The Beavers found the equalizer in the fifth inning after a pair of hits by Lovie Lopez and Alysha Everett allowed two runs to score. The Hornets committed two errors in the inning, which also allowed a run to score.
Â
In the sixth, the Beavers put a base runner on after another Hornet error, which would be costly. Jessica Garcia made it to second before Shelby Weeks doubled down the right-field line to bring her around to score and give the Beavs a 6-5 lead.
Â
Sacramento State put a runner on base in the seventh, but the Beavers' defense snuffed any scoring attempt.
Â
Everett and Garcia led Oregon State with two hits apiece, while seven total Beavers notched a hit. Meehra Nelson hurled the complete game, recording four strikeouts and no earned runs.
Â
Oregon State (15-7) will return to Corvallis and open its home schedule Monday at 1 p.m., against No. 7 Minnesota at the OSU Softball Complex.
