CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team returns eight starters and five NCAA participants from a 2015-16 unit that captured its fifth consecutive Pacific-12 Conference championship.
"We've been working hard and had a good preseason," said coach Jim Zalesky, who begins his 11th year as OSU having earned the last five Pac-12 Coach of the Year awards. "I like the way we are working, I like our attitude and the way we work out."
The Beavers were ranked 16th on Wednesday in the first USA Today/NWCA Division I poll. They will face five teams in the inaugural Top 25 during the regular season: Michigan (10); Rutgers (12); Stanford (17); Oklahoma (18) and Arizona State (21).
Future opponents Appalachian State, Duke and Wyoming also received votes.
The Beavers have veterans at seven, and potentially eight, weight classes, pending the results of Thursday's annual Black & Orange Intrasquad scrimmage, set for 7 p.m. at Gill Coliseum. Admission is free.
NCAA returnees are junior All-American heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi, the reigning Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year who placed fifth nationally in his weight class; junior Ronnie Bresser (125); senior Joey Palmer (141; 133 in 2015-16); senior Joey Delgado (149), and sophomore Corey Griego (184). Juniors Jack Hathaway (141) and Cody Crawford (197) also have NCAA-tournament experience, having advanced in 2015.
"The weights we have to figure out at 165, where Seth Thomas graduated, and 174, where Tyler Chay didn't return to the program," Zalesky said. "We will figure those weights out, and go from there."
Bresser and redshirt sophomore Keegan Calkins will battle at 125. Freshman Devan Turner appears to be ticketed for a starting berth at 133. Palmer has moved up to 141, where he and Hathaway will contest for the starting nod.
Delgado and junior Abraham Rodriguez are returning starters at 149 and 157, respectively. Griego (184), Crawford (197) and Dhesi (hwt) combine to give the Beavers a powerful 1-2-3 closing punch in the upper weights, especially with Crawford fully recovered from a shoulder injury that hindered him all last season.
That leaves 165 and 174 as question marks. Thomas, a two-year NCAA qualifier at the lower weight, will be the biggest hole to fill.
"At 165 we have Weston Dobler, who wrestled at 174 last year, or Rodney Williams and Collbran Meeker," each of whom move up from 157, Zalesky said. "We will see what happens there.
"At 174, a lot depends on what happens at 165. We also have freshman Bob Coleman," a 2016 state champion at 5A powerhouse Hermiston, also the alma mater of Delgado and Rodriguez. "He could go right away."
The lone veteran 174-pounder, senior Ali Alshujery, is still recovering from offseason ACL surgery and won't be ready before December at the earliest.
The Beavers open the regular season on Sunday at the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University in Forest Grove. They begin the dual-meet season against Duke and host Appalachian State in Boone, N.C., on Nov. 12.
Their dual-meet home opener is Nov. 20 against Michigan. They begin Pac-12 action by hosting Stanford on Jan. 30, 2017.
"Stanford will be good, Arizona State has a lot of new guys so they will be better," Zalesky said in analyzing the Pac-12. "Boise State, Cal Poly and Bakersfield all have new coaches.
"I think the conference will be pretty competitive at the tournament."
There are two changes in the coaching staff. Alum Taylor Meeks returns as an assistant coach, succeeding Troy Steiner, the new head coach of the revived Fresno State program. Meeks assisted at Boise State in 2015-16.
Former Kent State standout Ian Miller succeeds Devin Mellon as the volunteer assistant. Mellon returned to Missouri, his alma mater, for this season.
