Scouting the Redhawks:
Seattle U is 4-1-1 this season and currently on a three-game winning streak. The strength of the team this season has been its defense, allowing four goals through six games, an average of 0.67 per game. With a record that includes a 1-1 draw against Washington, the duo of Marla Gaudlitz (three goals) and Caroline Penner (two goals, one assist) has fueled the Redhawk offense; in net, Kassidy Kirgan enters Sunday's game with 27 saves while maintaining a save percentage of 87.1%.
We've Got Shooters:
Averaging 12.3 shots per game in 2023, the Beaver offense has shown a commitment to trying to create offense this season. After finishing with six at Montana, the Beavers' last three games have finished with shot tallies of 14 or more, which includes a combined 14 on target. Against Nebraska, the Beavers had a season-high 16 attempts on goal which included six on target, forcing five saves. Martinez (four) along with Turi (two shots, one on goal) and Carly Carraher (three shots, one on goal) led the way.
Connections:
Entering her third season at Oregon State, Ava Benedetti's college career started at Seattle U in 2019. After starting 11 of her 22 appearances and scoring once as a freshman, Benedetti was a First Team All-WAC selection as a sophomore thanks to eight goals and three assists across 18 starts. She transferred to Arkansas for her third season of collegiate action, making 19 appearances, before joining the OSU program ahead of the 2022 season.
Decoy:
Currently tied for fourth on the all-time goal scoring list at Oregon State, McKenna Martinez found herself on the scoresheet against Nebraska thanks to her assist on Turi's goal. Taking the ball near midfield and playing Turi who cut inwards and scored, Martinez is now up to 10 assists in her collegiate career. The assist also accounted for her first point in 2024, which puts the Richland, Wash., native in sixth place all-time for total points scored by a Beaver.
Sniper:
Turi's junior season is off to a fast start, as the Abbotsford, B.C., Canada, native has scored twice in four appearances, including two of the last three games. Having scored from well outside the box in OSU's victory over Idaho State on Aug. 28, Turi's goal against the Cornhuskers once again came from outside the 18-yard box after a shot from range earlier in the game missed just high.
Having scored in two of the final three games last season, Turi has scored four times in her last seven appearances.
A Brand-New Team:
The Cornhuskers struck early with two goals in the opening 11 minutes, but Oregon State responded and quickly created several opportunities throughout the remaining 80 minutes of action. Nine minutes after conceding the second goal, Valerie Tobias played Carly Carraher through for a one-on-one with the opposing 'keeper who rushed out for a kick save, and a Martinez rebounded effort from distance was also saved.
Benedetti put a header off the frame of the goal in the 31st minute as OSU would ramp up pressure after scoring, out-shooting Nebraska 5-0 in the final 10 minutes of play but weren't able to find the leveler.
And Then There Were Two:
There are just two players who have played every single minute this season in midfielder Mia Erba and goalkeeper Mya Sanchez. Erba, a sophomore from San Jose, Calif., has started 13 of her 18 appearances at OSU and played over 1,100 minutes, while Sanchez, a junior from Turlock, Calif., has four in her career – all of which have come in 2024.
Career High:
Sanchez's first season as a regular starter has gotten off to a strong start, and that culminated in a career-high seven saves against Nebraska. Through four games, Sanchez has a save percentage of 75.0 and has saved 21 shots, averaging 5.25 per contest. She has made several big stops throughout the year, including a sprawling effort to her left to preserve the clean sheet in OSU's 1-0 victory over Idaho State last week and a point-blank stop against the Cornhusker from an attacking player who was one step outside the six-yard box.
What's Next:
Oregon State welcomes Fresno State (Sept. 12) and South Dakota State (Sept. 15) to Corvallis for the next two matchups, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
