SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:
In the first season under Head Coach Katie Benz, Gonzaga has gotten off to a 4-4-1 start that includes wins over schools such as Kansas and Kansas State. True freshman Amelia Severn tallied two goals and one assist in the last game, fueling a 3-1 home victory over the Denver Pioneers; Severn now leads the team in points with six as four different Bulldogs have scored two goals this season.
As a team, GU is finding the back of the net an average of 1.2 times per game, putting 47.6% of the 124 overall shots on target and holding opponents to 12 shots per contest. Goalkeeper Lauren Towne has made 35 saves on 108 shots faced, with a save percentage of 74.5
A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING:
Saturday's game marks the 18th meeting between Gonzaga and Oregon State, with OSU holding a 12-5 advantage in the all-time series. GU was victorious in the last matchup, played in 2018.
GU is a brand-new opponent to every single member of the Oregon State program, as no members of the current roster played in the 2018, while none of the Beaver coaches have faced the Bulldogs either as a player or as a coach during the fall season.
DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK:
Oregon State was on the road last game, facing Mountain West side Wyoming in Laramie. After conceding off a corner kick in the fourth minute, the Beavers settled in and consistently created chances throughout the game but found late goals off the feet of Carly Carraher in the 85th minute and McKenna Martinez in the 88th to secure a 2-1 win.
LUCKY NUMBER THREE:
Originally from Portland, Ore., Carraher's goal was the first of her season and the third in her OSU career. Each of her three career goals have been in games when the Beavers secured points, previously scoring in a 3-2 victory over UC Irvine and 2-2 draw against Utah last season. This year, Carraher has made four starts in seven games and enters this weekend's matchup with 13 shots (three on goal) across 401 minutes played.
BREAKTHROUGH:
Martinez entered Thursday's game in a tie for fourth place on the OSU all-time goalscoring list and sixth for total points, but left Wyoming with sole possession of fourth for goals and moved up into a tie for fourth in total points.
Credited with an assist on Carraher's game-tying goal, the Richland, Wash., native found the back of the net for the first time in 2024 soon after, catching the Cowgirl 'keeper off her line with a rocket to the near post. Already leading the team in shots and shots on goal, the late game heroics now have her in a tie with Megin Turi for the team lead in total points (four).
HELPERS:
A former First Team All-Big East selection, Katie Godden has been pivotal for an OSU attack that has scored multiple goals in consecutive games, recording assists in back-to-back appearances. Against South Dakota State, she played Valerie Tobias in for a goal that put the Beavs up 2-0 late in the first half, before lofting a ball to Martinez who scored the game-winner.
In her career, Godden is now up to nine goals and six assists across 57 total appearances.
SO CLOSE:
Though the goals came late against Wyoming, it initially looked like the Beavers wouldn't have to wait long to find the breakthrough. In the 23rd minute, Amaya Bautista got her head on the end of a corner kick and beat the Wyoming goalkeeper, but a Cowgirl defender was standing on the line and able to head it away. The team's minutes leader in 2023, Bautista is now up to four shots across 674 minutes played on the Beaver back line in 2024, starting seven of her eight appearances.
THAT'S OUR KEEPER:
Having previously made eight appearances off the bench across her first two seasons at OSU, Mya Sanchez earned her spot as the team's No. 1 goalkeeper and made an immediate impact in the first half of the season. Through eight appearances (all starts), the Turlock, Calif., native has made at least five saves in six games, which included a career-best seven against Nebraska on Sept. 5, all adding up to 42 in total.
In Thursday's win over Wyoming, Sanchez posted a save percentage of 85.7 and stopped six of the 17 total shots she faced.
WEST COAST CONFERENCE:
Thursday's game against Wyoming marked the last non-conference game of the regular season. Including Saturday's matchup against Gonzaga, the Beavs will play 10 games against WCC opponents before the season concludes; there is no conference tournament.
Oregon State will be an affiliate in 2024 and 2025 with the WCC before returning to action in a rebuilt Pac-12 in the 2026 season.
