Rushing Attack Pushes Beavers Past Purdue
September 21, 2024 | Football
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Totaling over 300 yards (341) on the ground and holding the ball for over 40 minutes, Oregon State took down Purdue on Saturday night by a 38-21 line.
Jam Griffin led the rushing attack for the Beavers (3-1) with 137 yards – a season-best – including a touchdown on 22 carries. Anthony Hankerson plunged into the endzone twice, while totaling 89 yards on 20 chances. Zachary Card found the endzone for the first time in his career and ended his day with 45 yards on a pair of touches.
Gevani McCoy led the Beavers in passing, totaling 104 yards on 10-of-18 through the air, while Trent Walker hauled in 37 yards on three catches.
Sixteen Beavers registered a tackle on the night and were led by Skyler Thomas' 7.0 and a pair of pass break-ups. Zakaih Saez registered an interception in the first quarter when he snagged a deflected ball off a Purdue reciever's foot, taking it in for a touchdown. The Beavers' defense held strong, holding Purdue scoreless in a pair of red zone trips in the first half – with drives that came up empty which ended as close as the Beavers' 11-yard line.
Racing out to a 14-0 lead off the Saez 20-yard interception returned for a score and a one-yard dash by Hankerson, the Beavers were in a good spot just 16 minutes into the contest. Despite the Boilermakers halving their deficit off a 32-yard sprint to the endzone in the second, the Beavers responded with 10 unanswered to build a 17-point lead after three frames.
Touchdown runs by Griffin (14 yards) and Hankerson (12 yards) in the fourth closed out the scoring to keep it to a 17-point margin after Purdue put up 14 for themselves.
Oregon State held onto the ball for 40:15, well over three minutes above their average time of possession this season, which was 37:09. The Beavers' 341 rushing yards marked the second-most of the season so far and the second instance of at least 300. Oregon State's season-opening win saw the Beavers rush for 362 in the win over Idaho State last month.
The Beavers will be back in action against Colorado State on October 5th following a bye week. Action from Reser Stadium is set for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff and can be seen on The CW.
