Beavers Hold Off Colorado State in 2OT
October 05, 2024 | Football
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State football team used 25 late points – spread throughout the fourth quarter and both overtimes – to hold off Colorado State by a 39-31 margin on Saturday evening.
Holding an 11-point lead at 21-10 eight ticks into the fourth, the Beavers (4-1) could not muster enough stops to thwart the Rams inside Reser Stadium in regulation. Colorado State opened their time in the final stanza with consecutive touchdowns to flip the game to a 24-21 lead, mounting pressure on Oregon State.
The Beavers responded to the call, taking the ball 52 yards and set up Everett Hayes to split the uprights on a 44-yard field goal, sending the game to overtime. Staying consistent with the strongest part of the offense – the run game – Oregon State used a rushing score in both overtimes to clinch the game at 39-31.
Oregon State's rushing attack churned a combined 251 yards, with Anthony Hankerson's 113 leading the way. Adding to his team-best yardage, he carried the ball a season-high 26 times and carried it to the endzone twice. Gevani McCoy – the Beavers' signal caller – combined for 238 all-purpose yards (147 through the air) and dashed for a team-best three scores. Through the air, Trent Walker hauled in a team-leading seven receptions for 55 yards.
A quartet – Mason White, Isaiah Chisholm, Skyler Thomas and Melvin Jordan IV – led the Oregon State defense with 7.0 tackles apiece. Additionally, Thomas was one of four to register a pass breakup and Dexter Foster registered a sack.
Following Justin Marshall's score for Colorado State to open things in the first, the Beavers responded with a pair of endzone trips in the second with a Ram field goal in between. McCoy and Hankerson dashed past the goal line to top scoring drives of 82 and 87 yards, respectively, to build a 14-10 lead at the intermission.
McCoy found the endzone one more time in regulation – in the fourth – to give Oregon State a 21-10 cushion after another long drive. Scores by McCoy in regulation ended drives north of four minutes.
While Colorado State struck first in the first extra frame, Oregon State responded with runs for six by McCoy and Hankerson to seal the win. The Beavers' defense held strong with a fourth down stand to clinch the result at 39-31.
With the win, Trent Bray has the best start by a first-year OSU head coach since Lon Stiner's 4-0-1 mark to open the 1933 campaign.
Oregon State will return to the road next week in Reno when they will face Nevada on October 12. Kickoff from Reno is set for 4:30 p.m. and can be seen on CBS Sports Network.
