Scouting the Opposition:
Fresno State is 4-1-1 on the year with victories over Cal Poly (1-0), Weber State (2-1), Montana (2-1) and CSU Bakersfield (2-1); the last victory, against CSU Bakersfield, saw the team score goals in the 87th and 89th minutes to claim a victory. Led by Head Coach Brian Zwaschka, who's now in his 16th season as a Bulldog, the team has allowed just four goals all season, while playing aggressively and earning 12 yellow cards and one red.
Clara Wilson and Sam Paepen lead the way offensively with two goals apiece while Shivani Battaglia has saved 82.6% of the shots she's faced in net.
South Dakota State is 4-2-1 this season and coming off a home draw against Drake. Through seven games played, SDSU has played just twice at home while excelling on the road, boasting a 4-1 record when playing outside of Brookings. Much like Fresno State, the Jackrabbit defense has been stingy this season, allowing just 0.57 goals per game while out-shooting opponents 19.4 to 7.6. Katelyn Beulke's three goals lead the way for the team while goalkeepers Emma Knack and Stephanie Leckwold each have a save percentage north of 81%, splitting time 50/50 in net.
SDSU faces Wayne State at home on Thursday before traveling to Corvallis.
Series History:
Thursday's game marks the sixth time that Oregon State and Fresno State have matched up, and the fifth time that game has been played in Corvallis; OSU holds a 4-0-1 record in the all-time series.
Assistant Coach Leah Pruitt is the only member of the coaching staff to have played against Fresno State during her collegiate career. Then a freshman at San Diego State, Pruitt started and scored twice in a 2-1 victory on Oct. 16, 2015.
Back on the Scoresheet:
Aidan Brown is now four games into her senior season at Oregon State and did something on Sunday that she hadn't done since her freshman season: put the ball in the back of the net. 1,053 days after scoring against Utah on Oct. 21, 2021, the Happy Valley, Ore., native scored with a diving header off a ball the Redhawk goalkeeper deflected up into the air.
Having scored twice in her freshman season, Brown is now up to three goals as a Beaver.
Early Opportunities:
OSU created two great chances early in the first 10 minutes of action against Seattle U on Sunday. Paola Figueroa forced a save with a lobbed effort in the seventh minute before Megin Turi unleashed a rocked from a near identical spot as her goal three days prior, but the shot forced a diving effort from the Redhawk goalkeeper that went out for an OSU corner. McKenna Martinez forced a save in the 23rd and Katie Godden had an effort blocked later in the half.
Close to Home:
Approximately 35 miles of driving separate Sumner High School and Championship Field in downtown Seattle, where freshman Ari Hill made her second appearance of the season. A three-time First Team All-League and two-time First Team All-State selection at Sumner, Hill on Sunday played a season-high 33 minutes off the bench at Seattle U.
Through five games, Hill has appeared twice, having also played 18 minutes against Montana on Aug. 18.
Playing Clean:
Oregon State has shown itself to be a team that stays out of the official's pocketbook this season. Through five games, only three players have been booked for a total of four yellow cards, with none of the team's 31 fouls warranting a red card; the 31 total fouls represent the lowest mark among teams in the WCC while the Beavers have drawn 51 total fouls from opposing teams.
Opportunity:
In her first season leading the program, Interim Head Coach Caroline Kelly has shown a willingness to switch up the starting eleven. Across five games, the team has run out four different starting lineups, with the only repeat lineup coming between Yale and Nebraska; 13 different Beavers have earned a start this season.
Veteran Leadership:
On a roster laden with veterans, three longtime Beavers have been among the team leaders in minutes played. Of the six outfield players to play 400 or more minutes, four are upperclassmen and three are listed as seniors or graduate students: Juju Barker, Amaya Bautista and Valerie Tobias. The trio enter this weekend of play with a combined 161 appearances, making 91 starts and playing a total of 9,514 minutes.
On Frame:
While total shots are up this season compared to last, the Beavers have done a better job of putting shots on target. Though the team has put 33.3% of total shots this season on frame, there have been three games with at least five, including a season-high six shots on goal during the 1-0 victory over Idaho State on Aug. 28 and against Nebraska on Sept. 5.
