Jackson Lake Leads Beavers On Day One In La Quinta
February 20, 2023 | Men's Golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. – Jackson Lake carded an even-par 71 to lead the Oregon State men's golf team in the opening round of The Prestige on Monday.
The Beavers shot an 8-over 292 at the par-71, 7,100-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West to put them in 13th place in the 24-team field with 36 holes to play.
It was Oregon State's first competition of the spring season as the Amer Ari Invitational, which was scheduled two weeks ago, was canceled due to inclement weather.
"Overall, it was a nice start to our spring," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "PGA West Norman Course is not necessarily the first course you want to play in competition out of the gate because it is so demanding.
"The course is tight off the tee with desert on both sides and the greens are very firm and fast. The team did a nice job of competing and finding a way to save shots when they found themselves in trouble."
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday, and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. The Beavers are in the second wave, will start the day at 11 a.m. and be paired with Cal Poly and Princeton.
"Now that we've got our feet wet in competition I think they will be a bit more comfortable at the beginning tomorrow and Wednesday," Reehoorn added.
Lake had five birdies in the first round -- on the par-3 fourth, par-5 eighth, par-5 12th, par 16th and par-4 18th holes -- and three bogeys for his even-par round that has him in a tie for 27th place.
Rylan Johnson and Mateo Fuenmayor both shot a 2-over 73 and are tied for 44th place, as Johnson had four birdies and Fuenmayor finished the day with two.
Collin Hodgkinson wrapped up the opening round with a 4-over 75 to make up the Beavers' team score for the day, while Carson Barry was a stroke back with a 5-over 76.
