Beavs Head East
September 07, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Drawing the curtain on the nonconference slate for the 2022 season, the Oregon State women's soccer team will head east for the final two before Pac-12 play ramps up. No. 5/2 Virginia and James Madison will be the tests for the Beavers in the furthest trip of the season.
The Beavers split their last two: besting Boise State by a 2-0 margin and fell to UC Davis by a 2-1 scoreline. McKenna Martinez notched all three of the Oregon State goals on unassisted shots to lead the OSU offense. Hailey Coll registered her first shutout of the season in the win over Boise State and was aided by a strong backline that did not allow a shot in the second half or even a corner kick in the game's entirety.
This will be a trip full of firsts as it will be the first time the Beavers will face James Madison and the first time since 2018 that the Beavers will play an ACC opponent.
SCOUTING VIRGINIA
The first ranked opponent on the schedule for Lauren Sinacola's Beaver squad is one of the ACC's toughest in the Virginia Cavaliers. Coming in with an unblemished 6-0-0 mark, the Cavaliers have conceded just one goal in a 3-1 win in the season opener. Haley Hopkins has been a constant in the Virginia attack, totaling 15 points from seven goals and an assist, while a pair – Lia Godfrey and Alexa Spaanstra – have each added 7 points from a pair of goals and three assists to power the offense. Virginia's three keepers – Cayla White, Michaela Moran and Ally Reynolds – have had to combine for just eight saves in their six contests.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE CAVALIERS
Oregon State bested Virginia by a 2-0 margin in the only previous meeting between these sides, back in 1999.
SCOUTING JAMES MADISON
With an identical 3-1-2 record, the Dukes will face off with Northern Colorado prior to meeting the Beavs. James Madison's sole blemish through six is a 2-0 road setback at the hands of Virginia. Amanda Attanasi has led the JMU attack with eight points from three goals and a pair of assists. Sophia Verrecchia, Lidia Nduka and Suwaibatu Mohammed have also added at least one goal to their tallies. Alexandra Blom leads the Dukes between the posts with 19 saves in 360 minutes of action. Two other keepers – Rachel Bump and Haley Stoup – have registered 90 minutes apiece in goal and have combined for five saves.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE DUKES
This is the first time the Beavers and Dukes will meet.
