Fetherstonhaugh Sets Pace for Beavers at Viking Rust Buster
September 03, 2021 | Women's Cross Country
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Oregon State University women's cross country team opened the season with a first-place team finish with 23 points at the Viking Rust Buster, hosted by Portland State in Portland, Ore. on Friday. Redshirt sophomore Grace Fetherstonhaugh and juniors Mari Friedman and Haley Wolf notched top-five finishes for the Beavers.
"This was a good start for us," said head coach Louie Quintana, "We wanted to make it hard for our opponents and get off the line quick, and we accomplished that. We really ran composed through the middle. Our pack is very strong, which will serve us well this year. Grace had a great run. It was comfortable and controlled. We had some great things happen behind her as well. Mari and Gabby looked fantastic and Haley was really strong during the second half. As always, we have some things to work on, which should be the case in September."
Fetherstonhaugh set pace for the Beavers, clocking a 4K personal best of 13:11.12 to place second. Following close behind was Friedman, who took third with a time of 13:34.27, and Wolf, who finished fourth and stopped the clock at 13:39.87.
Gabby Peterson clocked a time of 3:44.81 to place sixth. Kaylee Mitchell, Christina Geisler, and Audrey Lookner rounded out the top ten, finishing eighth (13:48.38), ninth (13:54.92), and tenth (14:01.05), respectively.
