Beavers Win Fourth Straight
March 01, 2019 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 15 Oregon State gymnastics team won for the fourth week in a row, defeating Alaska Anchorage and Bowling Green on Friday night at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers took control of the tri-meet from the outset finishing with a score of 195.825 to Alaska's 193.450 and BGSU's 189.500.
The Beavers moved to 9-2 overall with the win.
"We missed an opportunity to put up another big score tonight," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "Yesterday they did a phenomenal job on beam. Unfortunately, we didn't do that tonight. We have to get back in there and work towards finishing the season strong. This is a wake-up call in that sense before we get to postseason."
"But we also had some positive things tonight as well. It made a big difference having Lena (Greene) back in the vault lineup. She was an important part of the lineup from midseason on last year and it is good to see that she's coming back from her injury and Destinee Davis did a nice job filling in on floor for Madi (Dagen), who was resting her body."
Oregon State took a commanding lead early on, scoring 49.075 on the vault. Mary Jacobsen and Lena Greene, who was in the vault lineup for the first time in 2019, each posted scores of 9.85 to tie for second in the meet. Madi Dagen scored 9.825 and McKenna Singley, who celebrated her 22nd birthday on Friday, notched a 9.80.
Leading second place Alaska by a half-point, OSU registered 48.900 on the bars. Senior Mariana Colussi-Pelaez led the way tying her season-high with a 9.875 to win her second event title of the year. Isis Lowery scored 9.850 to place second while Jacobsen and Halli Briscoe each pitched in with scores of 9.825.
At the mid-point of the meet, Oregon State led Alaska 97.975-96.675, while Bowling Green was at 92.375. The Beavers scuffled a bit on the balance beam counting a fall and turning in an event score of 48.500. Madi Dagen posted a meet-high 9.90 for the Beavers and Maela Lazaro and Singley added scores of 9.875 and 9.825 respectively.
The Beavers saved the best for last putting up an impressive score of 49.350 in the fourth rotation. Lowery secured the event title with a score of 9.925 and Kaitlyn Yanish registered a 9.90, her sixth straight score of 9.90 or better on the floor. Singley tied her season-best with a 9.875 and Jacobsen and Savanna Force each posted scores of 9.825.
Oregon State goes on its final regular season road trip of the season next week when the Beavers visit LSU for a Friday night dual with the No. 4 Tigers.
