Beavers Conclude Fall Season with Orange & Black Regatta
November 16, 2019 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State rowing programs wrapped up the fall schedule with the annual Orange and Black Regatta on the Willamette River at the OSU Boathouse Saturday morning.
A record turnout lined the east bank of the Willamette as fans, friends and alumni cheered the Beavers to the finish at the OSU dock. The fans were treated to an inter-squad competition, post-race BBQ and boat dedications for each respective program.
The teams divided up into two squads – orange and black – with crews from Team Orange claiming victory over Team Black to conclude a competitive day of racing.
"This is the most people we've ever had here," head men's rowing coach Gabe Winkler said. "It started off as a practice originally and now it's turning into a big event. It's great to have that support from the alumni."
The event closed with an annual boat dedication for each team. The men's program named their boat "The Petersen" for the prominent donations and support for the program from the Petersen family.
The women's program dedicated their boat to former OSU rower and Olympian Devery Karz. In 2007, Karz began her rowing career as a freshman at Oregon State and worked her way up to the varsity level where she helped the Varsity 8+ crew qualify for the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships during the 2008-09 season.
She most recently won the lightweight double sculls at the 2016 Olympic Rowing Trials with teammate Kate Bertko and they earned an Olympic selection to represent Team USA in Rio.
The men's and women's programs are now idle until the spring. The men's team kicks off its spring season at the Lake Las Vegas Invitational Feb. 29 – March 1. The women's rowers open their season on March 7 against Stanford in Redwood Shores, Calif.
