Beavers Have Strong Outing at Nuttycombe Invitational
September 28, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
MADISON, Wisc. – Senior Juliana Mount paced the Beavers as the Oregon State cross country had a strong showing at the 2018 Nuttycombe Invitational, beating two nationally ranked teams on the way to a 16th place finish at the Zimmer Cross Country Course on Friday.
"We didn't have a perfect day, but it was still historic in the growth of this program," said head coach Louie Quintana. "We beat nationally ranked teams today and some pretty historically good programs, it's a nice one year turnaround for us."
The Beavers finished in 16th place out of 33 teams, which included 15 nationally ranked schools. OSU managed 409 team points finishing just four points behind No. 29 Oklahoma State, but managed to place higher than No. 25 Providence and No. 27 Georgetown. Colorado took the crown on Friday with 80 team points.
Mount, the lone senior on the Beavers team, led the squad for the second race in a row posting a time of 20:28.6 finishing in 36th place individually.
"JJ [Mount] was great," said Quintana. "I gave her a conservative plan, partly to help her teammates, even though she ran great she will race when better when I just let her go."
Freshman Haley Wolf continued her strong start to her career with another good race. The Mesa, Ariz. native improved her all-time mark in the OSU record books posting the 10th-best all-time mark in a 6,000-meter race at 20:52.5 on Friday.
Two other Beavers ran their way into the record books in Wisconsin. Sophomore Lexi Reed notched the 13th-fastest time running a 21:05.6 on Friday and finishing third for the Beavers. Sophomore Brigette Takeuchi crossed the finish line fourth for OSU in 21:18.4, tied for 20th on the all-time list.
Sophomore Audrey Lookner was the last scoring runner for Oregon State. Lookner ran a 21:25.0 on Friday, improving her best time of the season by nearly 20 seconds.
Freshman Mari Friedman finished with a time of 22:07.40, while freshman Grace Fetherstonhaugh started the race but did not finish.
"As you can see, we ran very well," said Quintana. "But we still have more to give."
