Bats Come Alive as Beavers Sweep on Final Day of San Diego Classic
March 04, 2018 | Softball
SAN DIEGO – The No. RV/RV Oregon State University softball team ended on a high note on day three of the San Diego Classic grabbing wins off of Boston University (6-6) and the University of San Diego (10-11).
The Beavers improved to 13-8 overall this season; finish the San Diego Classic 3-2.
GAME ONE OSU VS BOSTON U.
Oregon State had no intentions of playing from behind on the final day in San Diego. In the first at bat for the Beavers McKenna Arriola singled to left field then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jessica Garcia hit one in the infield to Madi Killebrew on first base advancing Arriola to third. Shelby Weeks grabbed her first of three RBI on the day in the next at bat with a sacrifice fly.
The Beavers led 1-0 after the first frame.
Boston tied the game at 1-1 in the top half of the third inning when a pair of walks forced a baserunner home from third.
Oregon State had an answer of its own in the third putting up the final three runs of the game.
Michelle Sass opened the inning with a single to the second basemen and beating the throw to first. Sass then stole second base during Arriola's at bat, who was walked. A single from Garcia brought Sass home, thanks in part to a Boston throwing error.
The Terriers moved for a pitching change trying to slow the Beavers' momentum. Shelby Weeks was first to face right-hander Lizzie Annerino, and earned her base on a full count walk.
In the next at bat Mariah Mazon brought home Arriola with an infield hit to the shortstop. Missy Nunes brought home the final run of the game with an RBI single up the middle allowing Weeks to score.
The Oregon State defense held strong in the sixth inning forcing Boston off the offensive with three runners left on base. The top of the seventh inning was consecutive outs to Camryn Ybarra at second base, and a ground out to Arriola.
Nerissa Eason (1-0) notched her first win of the season, tossing a complete game while striking out three batters.
GAME TWO OSU VS USD
The Beavers picked up right where they left off in the second game of a back-to-back morning. Mariah Mazon (5-4) got the nod throwing a complete game one-run performance. Striking out five batters on the way to a 5-1 win.
Oregon State notched all of its runs in the first two innings, with pitching and defense carrying the load the rest of the way.
Once again in her first at bat Arriola started with a single up the middle, followed with a Garcia walk. Weeks then stood in the batter's box and ripped one up the middle for an RBI, scoring Arriola from second.
After a runner advancing ground out from Alysha Everett, Nunes found space in the defense for a two-run single.
In the top of the second, Kayleen Shafer reached on a walk and advancing to second base on a wild pitch. Michelle Sass pounced on the scoring opportunity with a double to right field, her first of the season, advancing Shafer to third.
San Diego went with a pitching change opting to bring in right-hander Halle Kyler. Arriola wasted no time hitting a single to left field advancing the runners bringing Shafer home.
Weeks got her third RBI of the day a couple batters later with a single up the middle scoring Sass from third base. With the bases loaded and one out the Toreros got the force out at home, before a Nunes strikeout ended the side.
San Diego broke the shutout in the sixth inning behind a fielding error from the Beavers defense.
