Beavers Sweep on Day One of CSUN Tournament
March 09, 2018 | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –The No. RV Oregon State University softball squad pushed its win streak to three games with a sweep on the first day of the CSUN Tournament hosted by California State University Northridge at Matador Diamond.
The Beavers won their first game 8-3 over host CSUN (10-14), before blanking Seattle U. (13-10), 5-0.
Oregon State improved to 15-8 overall on the season.
GAME ONE vs CSUN
Oregon State got the scoring started in the second inning thanks in part to CSUN's defense. With the bases loaded, two hit by pitches and a walk, Taylor Troost (3-5) walked Kayleen Shafer for the first run of the game and first RBI of the day for Shafer.
Back-to-back errors on the field and throw from a McKenna Arriola groundball allowed two unearned runs to score before the inning was out.
The Matadors quickly brought the game back to a manageable situation with a two-run homer from Savannah Horvath in the bottom of the second.
The Beavers had another big inning in the third adding three more runs extending their lead to 6-2 after three innings.
Shelby Weeks reached on an infield single, and was driven home after yet another CSUN error. Alysha Everett reached safely thanks to that error, and was the second run scored of the inning off another RBI from Shafer.
Two more consecutive walks scored Missy Nunes, the third and final run of the inning.
The Beavers added another run to their total in the fourth inning. Once again thanks to an error, Weeks reached second safely. Two batters later on a wild pitch she scored putting Oregon State up 7-2.
Both squads tallied one run in the seventh inning. Chance Burden scored pinch running for Kayleen Shafer who reached on an infield single. A wild pitch followed by an RBI single from Garcia scored the final run of the game for the Beavers.
CSUN made one final effort in the seventh, but managed just one run for a final score of 8-3.
Nerissa Eason made her seventh start of the year, but it was Mariah Mazon (6-4) who got the win. Eason tossed 3.1 innings with three strikeouts, while Mazon threw 3.2 innings with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO vs SEATTLE
Meehra Nelson (8-4) picked up her eighth win of the season with a shutout, two-hit performance in the second game of a doubleheader. Seven of the first nine batters for the Redhawks were struck out by Nelson.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning; with runners on second and third Garcia was granted a base on a defensive error from Seattle allowing both Burden and Arriola to score.
In the fifth inning, the Beavers were granted three more unearned runs. Another fielding error from second base allowed Everett to reach safely and Garcia to cross home for the fourth run of the game.
Singles from Ybarra and Nunes pushed Everett across home for the final run of the day. All runs scored were unearned runs.
Garcia finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Lillie went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
