Beavers Post Four Wins in Season Opener
March 04, 2018 | Men's Rowing
HENDERSON, Nev. – The Oregon State men's rowing team claimed four wins in its season-opener at the second annual Lake Las Vegas Regatta.
Saturday's racing featured duals between Oregon State and Santa Clara before afternoon races scheduled to pit OSU against Dartmouth were cancelled due to high winds. OSU swept all three races against the Broncos on Saturday.
The teams resumed Sunday morning with all three teams racing.
"Racing two strong teams over the weekend allowed us to see where we are early in the season," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "Dartmouth was fast but it showed what we need to do to get that speed. The conditions were tough but such is Mother Nature. You just have to step up and handle it. We have a four week training block ahead of us and more work to be done."
The Beavers' Third Varsity 8 – powered by Zach Niedermeyer, Timothy Shearer, Benjamin Sebastian, Alex Hernandez, Tyler Gray, Andrew McSween, Hunter Rust and Camron Gharib and directed by Kate Godiers – claimed a pair of wins over Santa Clara during the weekend. Saturday, with the course shortened from 2,000 meters to 1,500, OSU's 3V8 (5-minutes, 50-seconds) claimed a three-second victory over the Broncos (5:53). The Beavers came back Sunday morning to repeat the feat, in a two boat race, winning by a full boat-length.
OSU's Varsity 8, consisting of Sasha Kosek, Baxter Call, Roman Pjajka, Glenn Miller, Neall Koetje, Jacob Randall, Hunter Smith and Jesse Maritz and coxed by Ercoli Crugnale, registered an impressive win over the Broncos on Saturday turning in a time of 6:43.4, more than 10-seconds ahead of Santa Clara. In Sunday's race, the Beavers came in second to Dartmouth and ahead of Santa Clara.
In Saturday's Second Varsity 8 race, the Beavers' crew of Miles Moran, Nils Patrick, Zach Fried, Alex Carlton, Jacob Hart, Max Shaffer, Austin DeMartine and Nick Taylor under the direction of Ben Garrison, rowed to victory with a time of 7:30.8, nearly 17 seconds ahead of the Broncos' crew. On Sunday morning, the Beavers 2V8 finished second behind Dartmouth.
The Beavers have four weeks of training before taking on Washington in Seattle, April 7.
