Oregon State out-shoots Wildcats 21-7
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's soccer team out-shot Kansas State 21-7 Friday evening, but was held to a 0-0 draw in its season-opener at Lorenz Field.
"You have to give Kansas State a lot of credit," said Oregon State head coach Linus Rhode. "They came in with a good game plan and they fought to the very end. We generated a lot of chances today, but we need to put them away. Overall, we take a lot of good things away. From here we just keep building."
Senior goalkeeper Bella Geist held the clean sheet, as the Oregon State back line held firm for the entire match.
The Beavers created the first scoring chances of the game in the match's opening minutes, as seniors Nikki Faris and Emma Jones both had shots blocked at the top of the box. Oregon State continued to control the match through the first half hour, out-shooting Kansas State 5-0 in the opening 30 minutes.
Jones and fellow senior Natalie Higgins both forced saves late in the first half, but the Beavers could not find a breakthrough and the teams headed to the break scoreless.
Oregon State picked up right where it left off to start the second half, as freshman Kaillen Fried narrowly missed on a shot from distance less than five minutes into the second period. Senior Kayla Latham followed that up by forcing a save from close range in the 59th minute.
Kansas State came close to going in front against the run of play in the 62nd minute, but an effort from 10 yards out curled wide. Neither side was able to find the net in regulation, and the teams headed to overtime.
Faris created a pair of chances early in the first overtime period, but was unable to fire the ball home. Geist came up with a sprawling save in the 97th minute to keep the game going.
Sophomore Taylor Lemmond took aim with a header in the second overtime frame, but it arched over the bar. Jones came close to giving the Beavers the win in the waning seconds, but the effort was saved.
Overall, Jones led the Beavers with seven shots, followed closely by Faris who tallied six. As a team Oregon State held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Oregon State hits the road on Sunday when it heads north for a matchup with Seattle U.
