Men's Crew Ends Regular Season in Seattle
May 06, 2017 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon State men's rowing team sent three boats to Seattle to compete in the 31st annual Windermere Cup/ Opening Day Regatta. The Beavers finished in the top four in each of the three races.
"This is such a chaotic environment and it's tough to keep your cool," said head coach Gabe Winkler. "The Second Varsity was up against the No. 1 boat, in that class, in the country from Washington and they held their own. This is a great way to cap off our regular season."
The Second Varsity 8 raced in the Cascade Cup taking fourth place covering the course in 6-minutes, 1.967-seconds. Washington finished one and two with times of 5:39.455 and 5:42.247, respectively, UC Santa Barbara took third place crossing the finish line in 5:54.999.
"All three of our boats really stepped up to the challenge of racing the No. 2 team in the country," said assistant coach Dameon Engblom. "The task of racing Washington is exponentially greater when you take them on, in their water, on the day they celebrate their rowing culture. If you can race well in the Montlake Cut amidst the distraction of thousands of Husky fans screaming at you than you can race anywhere."
The Beavers' Third Varsity 8, crewed by Jacob Hart, Henry Hebson, Austin DeMartine, Grant Van Kampen, Zach Fried, Will Johnson, Brad Vomocil, and Torin Kingshill, and coxswained by Heather Thompson, took third behind two Husky crews, finishing only five seconds behind the second-place boat, clocking a time of 6:06.180 to 6:01.932.
Oregon State's Third Varsity 8 covered the first 1,000-meters in 3:07.0 less one second behind Western Washington (3:06.4). They came back in the last 1,000-meters to take third, finishing almost six-seconds ahead of Western Washington in 6:08.845 to 6:14.181.
The Beavers return to action May 14 at the Pac-12 Championships in Gold River, Calif.
