Four OSU Crews Earn Bronze at Pac-12 Championships
May 14, 2017 | Men's Rowing
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Four Oregon State crews raced to bronze medal finishes and the Beavers finished third overall Sunday at Pac-12 Championships at Lake Natoma.
"The guys raced hard and four out of five boats receiving medals is a good day," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "Racing against the top teams in the country is what this conference is all about. To finish third, as a team, is a great feat in this loaded field. It was a good day with good racing for the Beavers."
In the tightest race of the day for OSU, the Beavers were dead even through the 1,000-meter mark with Stanford in the Junior Varsity 8 race. The crews raced neck-and-neck the entire length of the course with each responding to the other's efforts to pull away. However, in the end Oregon State's crew of Miles Moran, Aaron Baker, Hunter Smith, Jacob Randall, Roman Pjajka, Will Johnson, Ian Wright and Liam Kucey and coxed by Ben Garrison, earned the third place finish, by 3-tenths of a second, and a spot on the medal stand ahead of the Cardinal.
Oregon State's Varsity 8 crew turned in a strong race as well. The Beavers got beat off the starting line and spent the entire 2,000-meter race in an effort to close the gap on the Cardinal's top crew. Despite a strong effort, the Beavers crossed the finish fourth nearly four seconds behind Stanford.
OSU's other races were more cut and dried, with the Third Varsity 8 racing to third place ahead of Stanford by nearly 5-seconds, while the Novice 8 turned in a time of 6-minutes, 14.488-seconds, a full 21-seconds ahead of fourth place UCLA. The Beavers' Varsity 4+ also raced to third place finishing more than a minute ahead of the fourth, and final, boat from UCLA.
