TEMPE, Ariz. – Haley Nist dropped in four birdies to shoot an even-par 72 and lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the second round of the PING/ASU Invitational on Saturday.
The Beavers carded an 11-over 299 at the par-72, 6,337-yard ASU Karsten Golf Club and are tied for ninth place with Baylor through 36 holes with a 17-over 593.
Pac-12 teams hold down three of the top five spots in the 14-team field, led by UCLA (8-under 568) and Arizona State (7-under 569). Alabama is third (2-under 574), UNLV is fourth (even-par 576) and Arizona is fifth (3-over 579).
The final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Nist, a sophomore from Meridian, Idaho, started the day with a bogey but bounced back to birdie the par-4 third, par-4 11th and par-3 12th holes to get to 2 under. After bogeys on three of the next five holes, she birdied the difficult par-4 18th for an even-par 72.
It's the second straight round Nist has fired a 72, which puts her in a tie for 12th place with an even-par 144. She has seven birdies and nothing worse than a bogey through the first two rounds.
Seniors Ashlee Pickerell and Chelsea Saelee are both tied for 45th place with a 7-over 151. Pickerell opened the tournament with a 1-under 71 and shot an 8-over 80 in the second round, while Saelee has posted rounds of 75 and 76, respectively.
Sophomore Hannah Swanson is a stroke back of her senior teammates with an 8-over 76-76--152 to put her in a tie for 51st place. Freshman Olivia Benzin played much better in the second round and is in 74th place with a 17-over 86-75--161.
The individual title should come down to a pair of UCLA golfers, as Lilia Vu and Bronte Law are tied with a 9-under 135 for a four-stroke advantage over Sophia Schubert of Texas.
