Collins leads Beavers by Wildcats, 26-7

Oregon State quarterback Seth Collins rushed for 152 yards and threw two touchdown passes on Friday to lead the Beavers to a 26-7 victory over Weber State at Reser Stadium in the opening game of the Gary Andersen coaching era.
The first true freshman quarterback to start a game since David Moran in 1996, Collins threw the initial touchdown pass of his career, a 4-yard hookup with Victor Bolden, to give the Beavers a 13-0 lead with 6:47 remaining in the third quarter.
Then, after Weber State had drawn within 13-7 on an interception return, Collins led the Beavers to a field goal and a touchdown on their next two drives to clinch the win. He was the first quarterback to rush for 100 yards since Tim Alexander ran for 205 against Northern Illinois on Nov.16, 1996.
Collins also completed 10 of 18 passes for 92 yards and touchdowns to Bolden and Jordan Villamin. Villamin led the receivers with four catches for 70 yards, including a 44-yarder for a touchdown.
"Seth ran the ball a lot, he made some great throws and he seemed pretty poised for a freshman," Andersen said. "He made some tremendous plays with his feet, which is what Seth it. It's hard for a freshman to play in his first game but I think he handled it well."
Sophomore Garrett Owens added two field goals in each half to complete the scoring. He connected from 45, 40, 39 and 30 yards out.
The OSU defense limited the Wildcats to 178 total yards and did not allow a point. Linebacker Rommel Mageo had 11 tackles, a sack, broke up a pass and forced a fumble to lead the defense.
The Beavers return to action against Michigan in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 12. Kickoff is set for 9 a.m. at Michigan Stadium; the game will be televised by ABC.
