No. 17 Beavers Sweep USD, Outdueled by No. 1 Dawgs
April 12, 2015 | Men's Rowing
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The No. 17 Oregon State men's rowing team swept University of San Diego Saturday morning before facing a tougher afternoon challenge against No. 1 Washington at the Stanford Invitational.
“This morning the guys really punched the clock and got down to business. It was pretty much exactly what I expected to see,” interim head coach Gabe Winkler said. “In the afternoon it was a little more frustrating. It's hard to go against No. 1 and (Washington) looked like the best. But we've got another race tomorrow and we'll be ready to apply what we learned today.”
The OSU Varsity 8 defeated USD in the morning's closest race approximately two boat lengths ahead of the Toreros with a time of 5-minutes, 58.8-seconds nearly seven seconds before the San Diego boat crossed the finish.
The Varsity 8 consisted of Bobby Vernazza, Josh West, Henry Prosser, Aidan Daly-Jensen, Clark Fisher, Kyle Wilkins, Spencer Smith, Martin Forde and was coxed by Eric Sumner.
OSU's Junior Varsity 8, crewed by of Ben Augeri (coxswain), Grant Van Kampen, Tyler MacDonald, Collin Griffitts, Taylor Heen, Nathan Smith, Michael Jagielski, Henry Stout and Alec Martin, dominated the Toreros' JV crew coming in 10 seconds ahead with a time of 6:04.3.
The Freshman 8 crew came through as well for the Beavers producing a nine second victory over USD with a time of 6:05.3. The Beavers' F8 was crewed by Baxter Call, Austin Erickson, Jesse Maritz, Sasha Kosek, Alec Dulude, Conrad Forde, Callum Davies and Neall Koetje and coxed by Ercoli Crugnale.
All three OSU crews struggled against No. 1 Washington in afternoon racing rowing to second-place finishes.
In other racing, the Beavers had two crews competing at the Covered Bridge Regatta at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore. OSU's Third Varsity 8 finished second in a four boat race to Western Washington 6:24.70-6:34.01. But in the afternoon, the same crew of Max Cantrell, Jordan Zielinski, Rafael Gorriarán, Liam Kucey, David King, Quinn Murray, Josh Cosio, Nick Aerne and coxed by Jacqueline Logsdon, outraced WWU in a late spring to pull out the victory with a time of 6:12.45 to 6:13.83.
“The best thing that happened today was the way our 3V8 responded to losing this morning,” Winkler said. “They did a great job of re-grouping and coming back to win this afternoon. That's a group that doesn't have very much racing experience and is a fantastic result.”
OSU's Novice 4+ of Levent Arabaci, Garrett Childress, Eric Weiss, Bryan Gore and coxed by Kate Godiers won its morning heat less than one second ahead of Oregon's 'A' crew. In the Grand Final in the afternoon, the Beavers finished second to the same boat to come out second out of 10 crews.
The Beavers are back on the water Sunday for Day 2 of the Stanford Invitational when they'll face UC Irvine beginning at 9 a.m.
