Men's Crew Cruises Past Zags at Silver Lake
March 22, 2015 | Men's Rowing
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Oregon State men's crews cruised past Gonzaga sweeping all four races Sunday morning along the shores of Silver Lake. The Beavers have yet to lose a race during the spring season after sweeping University of Victoria two weeks ago.
Each of OSU's four boats got out quickly from the start and pushed away throughout the races never relinquishing ground.
“We came up here and each boat did its job,” interim head coach Gabe Winkler said. “This is a perfect way to kick off our spring break training. We've got some time until our next race so now it's all about gaining more speed. There are lots of improvements to be made.”
The Beavers' Varsity 8, which was made up by Bobby Vernazza, Josh West, Henry Prosser, Aidan Daly-Jensen, Taylor Heen, Kyle Wilkins, Spencer Smith, Martin Forde and coxed by Ben Augeri, raced to a 14-second win with a time of 6-minutes, 22.13-seconds while the Bulldogs pulled in with a time of 6:36.13.
Oregon State's Junior Varsity 8 won in the morning's closest racing, but it wasn't all that close. The Beavers' JV8 of Eric Sumner (coxswain), Collin Griffitts, Jordan Zielinski, Tyler MacDonald, Michael Jagielski, Henry Stout, Clark Fisher, Nathan Smith and Grant Van Kampen claimed victory with a time of 6:25.10 to Gonzaga's 6:37.07.
OSU raced two boats in the Third Varsity 8 race, with the 3V8 crewed by Max Cantrell, Alec Martin, Conrad Forde, Quinn Murray, Josh Cosio, David King, Rafael Gorriarán, Nick Aerne and coxed by Heather Thompson claiming the win with a time of 6:42.8. OSU's Freshman 8 coxed by Ercoli Crugnale and powered by Jesse Maritz, Austin Erickson, Baxter Call, Neall Koetje, Alec Dulude, Callum Davies, Liam Kucey and Sasha Kosek came in just behind with a time of 6:47.0 while the Zags finished in 7:16.0.
The OSU freshmen returned to the water after 20-minute break and repeated their earlier performance pulling out to an early lead of nearly a full boat-length at the 500-meter mark and continued to open the margin the rest of the way. The Beavers completed the sweep with a time of 6:41.3, more than 30-seconds ahead of Gonzaga (7:15.0).
The Beavers are idle until the Stanford Invitational at Redwood City, Calif. April 11-12.
