Beavers Haul Hardware Home from Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Oregon State men's rowing team opened the fall season this weekend at the Head of the Oklahoma regatta earning three medals in four races including taking gold in the Open 4+ category Sunday morning.
“The guys really had a good time and it was fun to be on such a big stage for the night sprints,” Oregon State head coach Gabe Winkler said. “Bringing home a gold, a silver and a bronze is always a good thing. Now we need to build on that for the next races.”
The Beavers' O4+, directed by Heather Thompson, and powered by Josh West, Spencer Smith, Nathan Smith and Jesse Maritz, outraced seven other boats to posted a dominant time of 15-minutes, 5.22-seconds more than 45 seconds ahead of second place.
Also on Sunday, OSU produced a second-place finish in the Open 4x. Racing in the quad, a category Oregon State rarely competes, the Beavers' crew of Bobby Vernazza, Sasha Kosek, Baxter Call and Alec Martin, churned down the course in a time of 14:30.32 to earn a silver spot on the medal stand.
In Saturday racing, the Beavers' Varsity 8 raced twice. The Beavers raced well in the afternoon head race covering the 2.5-mile course with a time of 13:32.18 finishing behind Harvard (13:15.13) and the host Oklahoma City's 'A' boat (13:23.86).
OSU was back on the waters of the Oklahoma River for the OCE NightSprints late in the evening. The Beavers finish fourth in the 500-meter sprint with a time of 1:22.12.
“I'm proud of how the guys rowed in all the races,” junior coxswain Heather Thompson said. “The night sprints were a trip. This was an awesome way to start the new year.”
The Beavers return to action Nov. 1 at the Portland Fall Classic.
