Beavers Race to Third at Head of the Lake
November 08, 2015 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE, Wash. – Oregon State raced five boats at the Head of the Lake with the Beavers Varsity 8 recording a third-place finish Sunday in Seattle.
The Oregon State V8, coxed by Heather Thompson and raced by Bobby Vernazza, Josh West, Jesse Maritz, Neall Koetje, Spencer Smith, Collin Griffitts, Grant VanKampen and Nathan Smith, pulled in with a time of 16-minutes, 48.614-seconds to earn a bronze medal finish behind Washington (15:59.074) and Stanford (16:22.699).
“I'm a little disappointed and we showed we've got work to do,” head coach Gabe Winkler said. “The guys rowed well but it can be much better. We'll see Stanford at our first spring race and the guys know what it's going to take over the winter to overcome them.”
OSU's Junior Varsity 8 finished fourth in its category, but also may have turned in the Beavers' best performance of the day. The JV8 crew, consisting of Jordan Zielinski, Sasha Kosek, Baxter Call, Ian Wright, Liam Kucey, Austin Erickson, Alec Martin and Rafael Gorriarán and coxed by Zack Moffitt, recorded a time of 17:01.799 to finish just over four seconds behind Stanford. However, OSU's JV8 opened its margin of victory over Gonzaga's V8 by nearly 12-seconds since last week's Portland Fall Classic.
“There are some very fast guys in the JV and they should be happy with how they raced. They did a nice job and increased the gap on the Gonzaga varsity from last week.”
OSU rowed a freshman only crew in the Third Varsity 8 race. The Beavers' novices finished with a time of 17:34.462 to finish seventh just behind Washington's 'D' boat.
To complete the day's racing, the Beavers broke up their V8 crew to race later in the morning in a pair of 4's. OSU's Varsity 4+ 'A' boat covered the course in 18:29.072 to finish fifth, behind four crews from Washington. Meanwhile, the Beavers' V4+ 'B' crew came in seventh at 18:59.770.
The Beavers are back on the water next Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Orange & Black Regatta in Corvallis.
