CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Washington Huskies scored an early goal and it was enough to hold off the Oregon State men's soccer team, 1-0, in a physically played Pac-12 opener Sunday afternoon. Washington (6-3-1, 1-0-0) scored its goal in the 10th minute off a flip throw-in by Michael Harris. The ball sailed into a scrum in the six-yard box and was headed home by freshman James Moberg.
The Beavers had trouble finishing plays throughout as they set the table nicely but couldn't convert for the equalizer. OSU's best chance in the first half came on a cross by Roberto Farfan from the left side but was out of reach for Emery Welshman. Welshman entered the contest with goals in three consecutive games. Farfan finished the day as the team's leader in shots with two.
The Beavers (5-3-1, 1-0-0) had their best opportunity of the game in the second half when Welshman served a pass into the box to Glenn Paden, whose header hit the near post as a foul was called on him. That was soon followed by Khiry Shelton's attempt to find Welshman being swept away by the Huskies defense.
The flip throw nearly gave the Huskies a two-goal lead in the second half, but the finishing header hit the crossbar to hold the score at 1-0. Freshman keeper Matt Bersano enjoyed the help from his bar on that play but still managed six saves in the defeat. Oregon State was looking to win its Pac-12 opener for the third year in a row. The Huskies had 15 fouls and a yellow card against while the Beavers had 13 fouls and two yellow cards called on them.
The Beavers move on to face No. 9 UCLA on Friday at 3:00 p.m. in another Pac-12 Networks broadcast.
