Early Goal Gives Cal 1-0 Win Over Men's Soccer

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon State men's soccer team played its final road game of the 2012 regular season Sunday afternoon at California and lost to the Bears, 1-0, in Pac-12 action. The Beavers outshot Cal, 16-14, and redshirt freshman keeper Matt Bersano made five saves.
The Beavers (6-7-2, 1-5-1) were looking to atone for last Sunday's 3-1 home loss to Cal, but the Bears put OSU behind the eight ball early. John Fitzpatrick scored in the second minute after a corner kick to provide the only goal for either side in the contest.
“Outside of the first 1:30 of the game, I'm very proud of the way we played after the disappointment on Thursday,” head coach Steve Simmons said, referring to the late loss to Stanford last week. “The guys responded very, very well and had multiple chances. They just didn't go in for us. That's the cruel part of the game because the guys had it right in every other part.”
The Beavers pressed throughout to find the equalizer, launching 16 shots and seven on goal. Seniors Emery Welshman and Alex Penny and sophomore Khiry Shelton each had three shots, and Penny led the Beavers with two shots on goal.
“We had like five chances that were very good and they came from multiple sources,” Simmons said. “It was a very comprehensive attacking display outside of the finish. I felt if we could have scored that first one, we may have been able to get one or two more.”
The Beavers move back into the friendly confines of Lorenz Field for a match with No. 7 UCLA on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
