CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team improved to 5-1-0 on the season with a 2-0 shutout of Central Arkansas Bears to win the 2010 Oregon State Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic Sunday night at Paul Lorenz Field.
"I thought this weekend was gritty," Oregon State men's soccer head coach Steve Simmons said following Sunday night's match. "Both teams we played were very physical, high tempo and high pace. It asks a lot out of our players emotionally and physically. To win both games on our home turf feels good."
The Beavers took the lead in the 35th minute of the game on Alex Eckerson's second goal of the season. He took a pass from Brian Ramsey and then curved the ball into the top right corner of the net past the outstretched arms of the Bears goalkeeper. It was Ramsey's first assist of the season. He leads the team in points on the season with 11.
Forward Travis Sanchez got in the action when he got a rebound goal off of an Eckerson shot for his third goal of the season. Eckerson drove the ball at the Bear keeper who blocked the shot but could not control the ball. The ball bounced back in front of the goal and Sanchez knocked it in.
Oregon State had 11 shots during the game with eight of them coming on goal. Beaver keeper Steve Spangler was tested four times during the game and came up with some great goal saving plays to keep the Bears off of the scoreboard and get his second shutout of the season.
An all-tournament team was selected following Sunday night's game. The Team is as follows:
Oregon State - Steve Spangler, Alex Eckerson, Brian Ramsey, Travis Sanchez
Seattle - David Raney, Sean Morris, Brandon Hamer
UC Davis - Chris Beville, Jason Santos, Nate Javadi
Central Arkansas - Joseph Cervantes, Regis Mawire, Jose Segura
Brian Ramsey was named the tournament MVP.
The Beavers are back at home next Saturday, Sept. 25 when they play host to the Bulldogs of Gonzaga starting at 7 p.m. at Paul Lorenz Field.
