CORVALLIS, Ore. - Whitney Horn and Dante Lipfert provided the scoring for Oregon State in a 2-1 win over Idaho in non-league women's soccer Tuesday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. OSU (1-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) built a two-goal lead before Idaho (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Big West) scored in the final 10 minutes.
"We defended pretty well," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "I just didn't think we brought the same energy we had Saturday (in a 4-0 loss to Portland). We've got to bring that intensity whomever we're playing against."
The Beavers will play in Hawaii's No Ka Oi Tournament this weekend, meeting Northern Arizona on Saturday at 9 p.m. PDT and Hawaii on Sunday at 9 p.m. PDT.
OSU will take a .500 record to the tournament after Horn and Lipfert scored a pair of high-quality goals against Idaho.
The first came in the 17th minute. Katie Henderson's corner kick from the right side sailed toward the far post, and Horn was there to head it past Vandal goalkeeper Jenell Miller for the 1-0 lead.
Oregon State made it 2-0 in the 60th minute when Ashley Johnston lobbed a pass inside from the left side, Lipfert was there to get her head on the ball and tip it past backup Idaho keeper Kim Carey.
"Idaho wanted to make it ugly, and we allowed it a lot in the first half," Fennah said. "In the second half, we brought better intensity and went to the ball quicker. We had some opportunities that we should have scored more goals but Idaho worked hard and fought throughout the game, which is what we expected."
The Vandals picked up their goal in the 82nd minute as Emily Nelson ran onto a loose ball and knocked it over the top of OSU goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease. Idaho had a chance to tie score with just over one minute remaining, but Jamie Lewis' direct kick from near the top of the box sailed over the crossbar.
Tuesday's game marked the final contest in which OSU will be missing senior defender Christy Castalanelli, senior goalkeeper Jerika Duran and junior forward BreeAnna Jolin due to suspension. The trio mised OSU's first two games as a penalty for playing in an indoor game that was a violation of NCAA rules regarding outside competition.
