HONOLULU, Hawaii - Oregon State erupted for its highest-scoring women's soccer game in almost three years late Saturday night, beating Northern Arizona 5-2 in non-league play at Hawaii's No Ka Oi Tournament. OSU (2-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) got two goals each from Katie Henderson and Dante Lipfert in the victory, with Henderson adding an assist and Morgan Crabtree two assists.
"We scored some great goals," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "There were no scrambles or tap-ins, they were all good quality goals. And we created some other good scoring opportunities, but NAU's goalkeeper made some world-class saves."
The Beavers will conclude the tournament late Sunday night against host Hawaii. The winner of that game will claim the championship of the three-team event.
Prior to the win over Northern Arizona (1-4-0), OSU hadn't scored five goals in a game since a 6-0 home win over Eastern Washington on Sept. 27, 1997. The Beavers hadn't scored five goals in a game away from Corvallis since a 5-0 win at Gonzaga in 1992.
Oregon State got on the board quickly against the Lumberjacks, as Henderson scored off an assist from BreeAnna Jolin in the fourth minute. Jolin received a ball played down the right side and crossed it to Henderson, who had gotten in front of a defender, and Henderson one-timed it into the net.
NAU tied the score in the 23rd minute on a goal by Erin Rummens, but the Beavers went in front for good in the 35th minute when Lipfert scored off an assist by Crabtree. Crabtree booted a corner kick from the right side, and Lipfert got her head on the ball to get it past the keeper.
"We came out with a lot of energy, but they worked hard as well and got a scrappy first goal," Fennah said. "Then we got back in the flow of things and knocked the ball around fairly well."
The Beavers made their margin 3-1 by halftime with Lipfert's second goal, this one coming in the 44th minute with an assist from Katie Henderson. Lipfert received the pass with her back to the goal, turned with the ball on her thigh and carried it inside, then volleyed it into the net.
Courtney Carter opened the second half with a goal in the 52nd minute with an assist from Crabtree. Crabtree broke through the center of the field and slipped the ball through to Carter, who steadied herself and scored from 12 yards out.
Henderson closed OSU's scoring with an unassisted goal in the 65th minute that made it 5-1. Jolin had the ball in the center of the field and played it to Henderson behind the defense, and Henderson angled onto it and beat the keeper.
NAU managed a final goal in the 73rd minute by Breann Suddock. Goalkeeper Jerika Duran saw her first action of the season for OSU, going the distance and making a pair of saves as the Beavers had a 21-10 edge in shots.
Henderson's five points in the game give her 20 career points, moving the sophomore within eight points of a place on OSU's all-time career scoring top 10. Henderson and Lipfert, another sophomore, now have eight career goals each, just two away from a place on the school's all-time top 10.
