CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jaime Clark hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to help lead the No. 1 Washington softball team to an 8-2 victory over 12th-ranked Oregon State at Ropes-Fetrow Field on Friday.
The Huskies (39-4, 3-1 Pacific-10) started the game off with back-to-back singles from Rosie Leutzinger and Kim DePaul before Clark belted her 14th longball of the year over the left field fence.
Jenny Topping then walked to keep things going for the Huskies, but Mo Downs popped into a double play and Beaver pitcher Tarrah Beyster proceeded to retire the next 10 batters before the Huskies got on the board again in the fifth inning.
"That was one of the best outings of the year for Tarrah, at least for that stretch of the game (innings 2-4)," said coach Kirk Walker. "I felt like she really settled down after they scored."
Beyster dropped to 16-7 with the loss, giving up eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Crystal Draper came in with a runner on and no outs in the seventh, she allowed one hit and one run.
The Beavers (26-10-1, 0-4) had chances to score, but left seven runners on base. OSU stranded two runners in the bottom half of the first, with Shelly Prochaska walking and Beyster picking a base hit before UW third baseman Kim DePaul stopped Jenni Jodoin's ground ball from getting through to end the inning.
Prochaska walked again in the sixth and Jodoin followed with a base hit, but Steph Adam's sharp line drive to third base was caught by DePaul to end the inning.
"We hit the ball hard, but we saw some timely great plays by (Washington)," said Walker. "That's what happens in the Pac-10. Great plays are made routinely."
OSU scored its only runs in the seventh. Draper reached on an error by second baseman Amy Hanson, and Parisa Plant came in as a pinch runner. Shannon Sorg then came up with a pinch hit single to put runners on first and second with just one out. Brynnen Guthrie then reached on error by Downs, who also missed her throw to the plate for her second error of the inning. Plant and Sorg both scored on the play.
The Beavers continue their homestand with a 2 p.m. contest against No. 3 UCLA at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 8.
