CORVALLIS, Ore. - Julie Marshall hit her eighth home run of the year to lead the No. 3 UCLA softball team to a 4-1 comeback win over No. 12 Oregon State at Ropes-Fetrow Field on Saturday.
The Beavers (26-11-1, 0-5 Pac-10) held an early 1-0 lead after scoring in the first inning. Shawna Feldt started things off with a base hit, then went to second on a ground ball and advanced to third on a passed ball. Tarrah Beyster drew a two-out walk to bring up Jenni Jodoin, who ripped a shot to left field to send Feldt home.
The Beavers kept their lead until the top of the third, when the Bruins (30-5, 5-0) cashed in on five hits and an OSU error to score four runs. With two outs and runners on first and second, Lyndsey Klein doubled to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead. Marshall then hit a home run that went over the left field fence to add two more runs to UCLA's total.
OSU had a chance to close the gap in the bottom half of the inning, but came away short. Shelly Prochaska hit a one-out double and the Bruins intentionally walked Beyster, but OSU's next two batters grounded out to end the inning.
The Beavers also left two runners stranded in the sixth inning and left a total of eight runners on base for the game.
"Our ability to hit with runners on base continues to be a problem," said coach Kirk Walker. "It was nice to score early, but we need to be able to score consistently."
OSU managed just four hits for the game - two from Feldt and one each from Prochaska and Jodoin. The Bruins picked up 10 hits - including a 3-for-4 performance from rookie shortstop Natasha Watley.
Crystal Draper threw 6.1 innings for OSU and gave up 10 hits with two strikeouts. She dropped to 10-4 with the loss. Beyster relieved Draper with one out and two runners on in the seventh and held the Bruins hitless for the duration of the game.
Amanda Freed picked up her 15th win of the season after holding OSU to four hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
The Beavers and Bruins wrap up the weekend series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, April 9 at Ropes-Fetrow Field.
