TUCSON, Ariz. -
No. 2 Arizona scored three runs in the fifth inning to break away from a 1-1 tie to defeat the 11th-ranked Oregon State softball team, 4-1, on Sunday.
The Beavers (26-9-1, 0-3 Pacific-10) took an early 1-0 lead after Shawna Feldt hit an RBI single to score Brooke Rutschman in the second inning.
OSU had a chance to add to its lead in the top of the fourth, but couldn't quite come through. Rutschman singled with one out, then Parisa Plant walked and Michelle Chariton had a base hit to load the bases. Feldt then hit a ground ball to UA pitcher Becky Lemke, who opted to make a play at the plate to prevent a run from scoring. Brynnen Guthrie lined out to shortstop to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.
"We did a nice job coming out after (Saturday)," said coach Kirk Walker, of his team regrouping from an 11-0 loss to the Wildcats (39-3, 3-0) the night before. "We hit the ball well, and we put a lot of pressure on them. We just didn't get a couple of breaks."
The Wildcats (39-3, 3-0) tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when Lindsey Collins scored on an error by Chariton.
OSU had more defensive troubles in the fourth inning. With just one out, Katie Swan reached base on an error by catcher Shelly Prochaska, and Swan then scored on Toni Mascarena's double. Mascarenas, who went third on the throw home, scored on the next play when Lauren Bauer grounded out to second base on what should have been the third out of the inning. Jennie Finch kept the inning going with another double, and she scored when Feldt committed OSU's third error of the game.
"We fell short in a couple innings with some defensive things that we'll be able to correct," said Walker.
Crystal Draper (10-3) took the loss for the Beavers, giving up five hits and three walks to go along with three strikeouts. All four runs were unearned. Lemke improved to 21-3 after throwing a six-hitter with four walks and four strikeouts.
