TEMPE, Ariz. - The Oregon State gymnastics team turned in a season-high team score at No. 18 Arizona State on Friday, but a strong floor performance by ASU and a couple Beaver falls on beam helped the Sun Devils overcome a narrow 0.20 deficit entering the final rotation. In the end, ASU came away with a narrow 195.300-194.300 victory over the Beavers.
"You want to score high and win, but it's tough to win on the road," said coach Tanya Chaplin. "Part of it may have been being on the road four times in the last five weeks. They're tired. They did hold on to things that earlier in the season they would have missed, but what I saw tonight was some wear and tear from being on the road."
The Beavers opened up the competition on bars, where they were led by Stephanie Bychowski's second-place 9.85. Annette Taylor and Jerra Lopez added 9.775 scores, and OSU tied its season-high with a 48.75. The Beavers did not have to count a fall on bars for the second meet in a row.
OSU followed up with a strong performance on vault, highlighted by Lara Degenhardt's first-place 9.825. Katrina Severin finished second with a 9.80, and Tanya Ricioli was fourth with a 9.70 vault.
The Beavers held a 48.75-48.325 lead after the first rotation, but a season-high 49.250 for ASU on bars in the second rotation gave the Sun Devils a slim 97.525-97.400 lead after two events.
A strong floor performance and a couple falls from ASU on beam gave the Beavers back the lead heading into the final event. Degenhardt turned in a season-high 9.85 to lead OSU on floor, and Ricioli added a 9.825 to lift the Beavers to a 48.925 on the event.
Lea Carver led off ASU's beam performance with a 9.925, but the Sun Devils still had to count Rhonda Robinette's 9.25 after Ashley Ellsberry fell.
As a result, the Beavers headed into the fourth rotation with a slight 146.325-146.125 advantage.
But falls got the best of OSU on the balance beam as well, and ASU turned in some impressive numbers on floor to walk away with the victory. OSU's Corrie Young fell and Annie Campbell missed her dismount, so the Beavers had to count a 9.225 on beam. ASU, on the other hand, got a 9.925 from Elizabeth McNabb and a 9.90 from Kelly Cowley on floor to help secure the victory.
