CORVALLIS, Ore. - Four Oregon State gymnasts combined for six scores of 9.90 or better as the Beavers turned in a season-high team score to defeat No. 24 Arizona, 196.275-193.450, in the Younger Oil/Texaco Showdown at Gill Coliseum on Friday evening.
Lara Degenhardt placed first on both vault and floor, with scores of 9.95 and 9.90, respectively. Annie Campbell also scored a 9.90 on floor to share the first-place title, and she added a season-high 9.90 on vault. Katrina Severin had a career-high 9.90 on vault as well, and Stephanie Bychowski scored a 9.90 to win bars.
"I've seen it coming all year," said coach Tanya Chaplin. "It was just (a matter of )when they were going to put it all together."
The Beavers scored season-highs on all four events, surpassing the 49.00 mark on all every event but bars. OSU tallied a 49.200 on floor, 49.125 on beam and 49.100 on vault. The Beavers finished with a 48.850 on bars.
Bea Tistu-Whisenhunt tied her career-best on beam with a 9.875 to place second, while OSU also got career-bests from Jerra Lopez (9.875) and Elizabeth Jillson (9.725) on bars. In all, the Beavers set or tied 15 individual season-highs and seven career-highs. Arizona's Kara Fry won beam with a 9.90 mark and teammate Randi Liljenquist tied for second with a 9.875 on the event, but the Wildcats did have two falls on beam. Arizona also struggled on bars, with three gymnasts combining for four falls.
UA's Heidi Hornbeek won the all-around with a score of 39.375, scoring no lower than 9.80 on any event. Campbell had a personal best 39.150 to tie UA's Fry for second.
OSU's season-high came just days after all-arounder Tanya Ricioli went down with a ligament sprain in her thumb. Ricioli's competition was limited to vault as a result of the injury, but she did score a 9.70 on her only event. Beam and bars specialist Annette Taylor also missed some practice days this week due to an illness, but came back to score a 9.80 on beam and a 9.75 on bars.
"(The team) did a great job tonight. It was an emotionally tough week," Chaplin said. "They did a tremendous job for all the injuries and illnesses we had to deal with."
