Gymnasts Lose Close Meet To No. 8 Stanford

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State gymnastics dropped a close contest to No. 8 Stanford after leading for much of the meet until struggling on floor in the final rotation.
The Cardinal defeated the Beavers, 195.100-194.800, overtaking OSU late in the competition. The Beavers had two falls on floor and also were docked .400 in out-of-bounds deductions to finish with a 48.475 on floor, normally OSU's strongest event.
Meanwhile, the Cardinal put together a 49.150 on beam, highlighted by Katy Herbert's first-place 9.90 score, to win the meet.
"It was more than just the falls. Without the out of bounds deductions, we were set up to tie (or win the meet)," said coach Tanya Chaplin. "They can compete with anyone in the country. They showed that tonight, but they just faltered under pressure."
Annie Campbell tied her career-high with a 9.90 on floor to win the event, and Jerra Lopez turned in a season-best 9.875 on the event, but OSU's other four competitors either fell or went out of bounds.
Campbell also led the Beavers on beam with a career-best 9.85 to tie for third on the event, while Stephanie Bychowski added her second-best score of the year with a 9.825.
Bychowski won bars for the third time this season by tying her career-high of 9.925, and Lopez tied her career-best with a 9.875 that earned second place. Elizabeth Jillson turned in a career-high 9.85 to tie Stanford's Larissa Fontaine for third place.
Fontaine took top honors on vault with a 9.95, while OSU's Lara Degenhardt finished second with a 9.875 score. Fontaine also won the all-around with a 39.525 score, while Campbell finished second at 39.100.
