TEMPE, Ariz. - Brooke Rutschman had two hits, scored three runs and added four stolen bases to lead the No. 11 Oregon State softball team to a 9-3 win over Utah State at the Fiesta Bowl Classic on Friday morning.
The Beavers (1-1-1) scored all nine runs in the first three innings, but Utah State (0-1) had just two hits for the game and never made much of a threat to come back.
"We hit the ball extremely well early on and came out on fire," said coach Kirk Walker. "A large mental lapse after the third or fourth inning kept us from scoring a little more, but it was a good offensive performance. We'll take that first `W'."
Rutschman set a new OSU single-game record with her four stolen bases, and she tied the single-game mark for runs scored.
OSU got doubles from Shelly Prochaska and Cara Maxey, and Prochaska and Parisa Plant each had two RBI.
Crystal Draper pitched the complete game to pick up her first win of the year while Xochitl Ramirez took the loss for Utah State.
"Crystal did a nice job and gave up just two hits, but she struggled a couple innings with some walks," Walker said. "She did a nice job of staying in there, though, and she actually finished a lot stronger than she started."
The Beavers continue competition at the Fiesta Bowl Classic with a 4:30 p.m. PST game Friday against Utah.
