PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon State gave up a pair of goals in each half and fell to Portland 4-0 in non-league men's soccer Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field. OSU (2-3-0 overall) now goes to Loyola Marymount on Friday and UCLA on Sunday for a pair of non-league games.
Against Portland (3-1-1), OSU fell behind 1-0 in the game's fourth minute, then played some of its best soccer of the season over the rest of the half.
"We had a good portion of the play," OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. "It was probably the best soccer we've put together as far as knocking the ball around, our shape - the whole game looked much better."
Portland added a penalty kick in the 26th minute for a 2-0 halftime lead. That was still the score when the Beavers' Jerod Fitzgerald was issued a red card in the 48th minute for a hard tackle, that limited OSU to just 10 players on the field for the rest of the game.
"We played the majority of the second half a man down, but in the first half it looked pretty darn good and we had a lot of sustained attacks," Taylor said. "Overall, hats off to Portland for finishing the job. Losing the man (for the red card) meant the score wasn't indicative of the overall performance of the team.
"I was proud of the boys for not quitting and for working hard. There were a lot of lessons here we can take into Loyola Marymount and UCLA next week."
For Portland, Conor Casey scored the Pilots' first three goals to earn a hat trick and Brandon McNeil picked up the final goal.
