Michael Eichler has been named women's rowing assistant coach at Oregon State University on August 28, 2017.
Â
Following a successful coaching career at the NCAA Division I and USA junior national levels, Eichler joins the program as recruiting coordinator.
Â
"Michael has had to work for every opportunity, and I believe he is a rare find," began head coach Kate Maxim. "He started with a small program, and has been very smart taking advantages at the junior level, junior national development and college levels, and has built a really solid resume with a variety of experiences.
Â
Eichler has been working with the United States Junior National Team for the past five years, training junior men that specialized in small boats. Responsible for evaluating and recommending athletes for selection camps, he also led seminars on college recruiting and advancement in the US National Team system.
Â
"Working with the Juniors Men's JNT Development camp helped to broaden my view as a coach," said assistant coach Michael Eichler. "The opportunity to develop numerous athletes from all over the country has lent me perspective on what makes a program successful."
Â
At Rutgers and Princeton University, Eichler oversaw the on-campus recruiting operations, while simultaneously bettering retention of walk-on rowers and coxswains.
Â
"He is very humble, self-motivated, smart, solution-oriented, and creative and all of those things give me absolute trust in Michael to be the brains behind the whole recruiting operation," Maxim said. "He will think outside the box with all of his backgrounds, and we will come up with a model that works really well for our staff and for Oregon State."
Â
Eichler began his coaching career at The Hewitt School as the head crew coach. He created and executed program rules, standards and training plan for a first-year scholastic crew. Eichler led the team to its first medal in program history.
Â
"Coaching at Hewitt gave me the opportunity to bring a sport and an attitude to a group of young women who had limited to no experience with rowing previously," continued Eichler. "It immediately gave me joy to find these young women invested into our philosophy."
Â
A captain for Binghamton men's crew, Eichler graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Asian & Asian American Studies.
Â
"I am excited to join the Oregon State University staff," said Eichler. "I want to thank Kate Maxim and Kimya Massey for bringing me on board, and I look forward to working with everyone at Oregon State to create an atmosphere and culture of success."
