Orange edges Black in intrasquad scrimmage
November 03, 2016 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sophomore Corey Griego won by fall and junior Abraham Rodriguez prevailed by technical fall to lead their respective teams on Thursday night at the Oregon State wrestling team's annual Orange & Black Intrasquad at Gill Coliseum.
Griego's pin of freshman Adam Rateb at 184 drew the Orange squad within 15-12 and was the first of three straight wins by it compiled to erase a 15-6 deficit. Junior Cody Crawford won by injury default at 197 to give the Orange an 18-15 advantage and junior heavyweight David Henry won 6-0 for three more points to complete the comeback.
"It was good to get out of the practice room. Everything is different out here," under the lights in Gill Coliseum, coach Jim Zalesky said. "This gives guys the feel they don't get when they are in the room."
Rodriguez (157) earned his technical fall and five points for the Black team with an 18-1 victory over sophomore Joseph DeMatteo. Senior 149-pounder Joey Delgado also earned bonus points for the Black team with a 13-3 major decision over redshirt freshman Bryce Parson.
Senior Joey Palmer, an NCAA competitor at 133 pounds last season, edged junior Jack Hathaway 5-3 at 141 in the only bout matching opponents with NCAA experience. Hathaway was the Pac-12 champion and an NCAA qualifier at 133 in 2015 but he moved up to 141 last season when Palmer came out of redshirt.
"The winner can do what he wants; the loser has to decide what he wants to do," Zalesky said. "Does he want to stay at 141 and keep trying, or does he want to go back to 133," and battle heralded freshman Devan Turner, who topped sophomore Hans Rockwell 8-4 in his match.
"Turner could be pretty tough so there is no guarantee [the 141-pounder] could beat him out."
The 16th-ranked Beavers open the season on Sunday at the Mike Clock Open tournament at Pacific University in Forest Grove. Their first dual meets are set for Nov. 12, against host Appalachian State and Duke at Boone, N.C.
"I am not sure who all we will take," Zalesky said. "Guys who don't need the matches might not wrestle. At 133, 165 and 174, we need matches."
No 125-pound match was held. Zalesky said sophomore Kegan Calkins will represent the Beavers at the Mike Clock event; Ronnie Bresser is a two-year starter/NCAA qualifier at that weight but he may redshirt.
"We will see what happens," Zalesky said. "We have the option to redshirt Ronnie and don't have to make that decision right now. We have a lot of time."
The Beavers will be without All-American heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi for the foreseeable future after he suffered a knee injury in practice earlier this week. Dhesi was the 2016 Pac-12 champion, the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the conference tournament, and the fifth-place finisher at NCAAs.
"We don't know yet; he will have to rehab and see if he can go, or if he will have surgery," Zalesky said. "It's just one of those things. He pushed off and it popped" in a non-contact situation.
"Probably by the [quarter] break we will see" exactly what needs to be done, he added, noting that Dhesi missed the 2015-15 season with a similar injury is his other knee. "It's rough."
