Beaver Rowing Readies For No. 16 WSU In Final Regular-Season Races

CORVALLIS, Ore. - In preparations for the Pac-12 Championships coming up in two weeks, the Oregon State women's rowing team will travel to The Palouse for its final regular-season races of the year when it takes on No. 16 Washington State at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River this Saturday morning.
"The annual race against Washington State is one of the great traditions of Oregon State rowing," Head Coach Emily Ford said. "It is a huge benefit to have such strong competition right here in the Pacific Northwest. This will be our last opportunity to learn from the race course before the Pac-12 Championships so we are looking forward to the challenge."
The two teams meet each spring to compete in dual action for the Crawford Perpetual Plate and the Winchell Cup, with the former awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race and the latter awarded to the team with the most total points on the day, with points awarded based on the boat's finish. The point system is weighted with the most points available in the V8 race. Oregon State last won the Crawford Perpetual Plate and the Winchell Cup in 2009.
Beginning with the 1N8 at 9 a.m., the Beavers had Cougars will have five crews compete head-to-head at 15 minute intervals. The 1V8 will start at 9:15 a.m., the 2V8 at 9:30 a.m. and the V4 at 9:45 a.m., before wrapping up with the 2N8 at 10 a.m.
"It is also the last race of this season for our Second Novice 8," Ford said. "My hope is that they are able to put together their best, most exciting race yet this year. The 2N is often the unsung hero of the team, but this group has worked extremely hard and they have pushed the team up from their position. I have a lot of respect for each and every one of these young women and their efforts are extremely valuable to the team."
In the schools' last meeting, the Cougars traveled to Corvallis, Ore. to face the Beavers on April 30, 2011. WSU completed the sweep of Oregon State, notching victories in all seven events.
OSU has had a week off since its last competition at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor on April 14. The Beavers had four crews compete twice each on Belleville Lake, as OSU's N8 swept a pair of races against host Michigan and Ohio State while the team's 1V8 finished in second place in a duo of heats that featured those same schools, then ranked third and sixth in the nation, respectively.
Oregon State is currently receiving six votes in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I Poll presented by Pocock Racing Shells. Six of the Pac-12's seven rowing squads are ranked in the top-20 (Cal-first, USC-fifth, UW-sixth, UCLA-eighth, Stanford-12th, WSU-16th).
