CORVALLIS, Ore. – Maalik Murphy tossed 201 yards through the air and Trent Walker hauled in 103 but Oregon State was edged by Houston, 27-24, in overtime on Friday night.
Despite holding the Cougars to sub-100 yards on the ground (82), the Beavers (0-5) could not respond to 17-unanswered points by the visitors in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Oregon State raced out to a 14-0 lead just minutes into the second quarter before the visitors could get into a rhythm. Jake Reichle punched the ball into the endzone from a yard out to get the Beavers on the board in the first quarter. Marquis Crosby doubled the lead to 14 when his five-yard touchdown reception capped a 70-yard scoring drive. Houston pulled within four to make it 14-10 at the break.
The Beavers would use second half scores from a Caleb Ojeda field goal and a Cornell Hatcher Jr. touchdown made the lead 24-10 before the Cougars' offense clicked in the fourth and the bonus period.
Hatcher Jr. led the rushing attack with 93 yards on 17 attempts and Walker's 103 yards paced the receiving corps. Reichle's touchdown was his first score on the ground this season.
Trey Glasper hawked an interception – the first of his career - in the first half that set up the game's opening score. Aiden Sullivan's 13 total tackles – a season-best - and seven solo stops led the Beaver defense in both categories.
Oregon State will travel east next to take on App State on the road on Saturday, October 4. Kickoff from Boone, N.C. is set for 12:30 p.m. PT and can be seen on ESPN+.
