T&F Weekend Wrap: Beavs Have Fun in the SoCal Sun
April 15, 2024 | Women's Track & Field
LONG BEACH/AZUSA, Calif. & PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon State track and field wrapped up an exceptional weekend on Saturday with five new top-50 national marks and eight performances that put Beavers in regional qualifying position.
Â
OSU sprints, jumps and throws competed at the Pacific Coast Invitational and Beach Invitational while the distance team was at the Bryan Clay with heptathlete Anneke Moersdorf. The pole vault squad traveled north to Lewis & Clark. The Beavers posted 14 new OSU top-10 marks with 31 personal bests in SoCal and Portland.
Â
"We had an elite weekend here in Southern California. Our track squad was unbelievable.  Several athletes not only etched their place on the OSU all-time list but moved up on the NCAA West Prelims list," head coach Louie Quintana said. "Kate Sorensen was incredible in the 400 hurdles and Adael followed that up with a great performance of her own. They give us one of the best long hurdle duos in the country."
Â
Sorensen was a feature of an elite weekend by the sprints group. She raced to a school and meet record of 57.38 seconds in the 400 hurdles, blazing a second better than both previous records. It is the 17th-best time in the nation.
Â
Adael Scatena followed with an incredible mark of her own, closing the weekend with a 58.48. The time would have broken the school record (her own, entering the weekend) if not for Sorensen. Scatena also raced to a 13.72 in the 100 hurdles, the no. 2 mark all-time.
Â
Jada Hurley also recorded a runner-up mark at OSU with an 11.77 in the 100 meters. She and Sorensen combined with Abby Buckley and Delaney Bahn for times of 46.13 (PCI) and 46.06 (Beach Invite) in the 4x100 meter relay, the no. 3 mark at OSU.
Â
"The field events were exceptional. Jade going 190-feet in the discus was big. Delaney jumped over 20 feet in the long jump and most likely punched her ticket to the first round. Anneke had an amazing heptathlon, almost getting to 5600 points," Quintana said. "But the big field event mark was from redshirt freshman Dede Norman in the high jump going 5'10 and a half. That's a top-three mark in the Pac-12 and a mark that puts her in the NCAA first round. Huge."
Â
Moersdorf led the way in the field with a 5,593-point performance in the heptathlon. It included the no. 3 mark all-time at OSU in the 100m hurdles – which was no. 2 before Scatena snuck in front later in the weekend – and the no. 10 high jump mark at 1.73m/5-8. Her 2:15.45 800 meters and 25.28 200 meters were also PBs.
Â
Dede Norman provided perhaps the weekend's biggest highlight. In her debut weekend, the sophomore cleared 1.79m/5-10.5, the sixth-best mark all-time and a likely regional qualifier.
Â
Long-jumper Delaney Bahn likely punched her regional ticket with a 6.16m/20-2.5 leap on Thursday. It was a PB for the redshirt junior, improving the no. 2 mark in school history.
Â
Jade Whitfield paced the throwers with a season-best 58m/190-3 toss on Thursday. The mark ranks 16th nationally and essentially assures the returning All-American of a regional appearance. Â
Â
The pole vault team recorded a win and two new personal bests with Mia Fowler and Claire Lee both clearing 3.63m/11-10.75 to take first and second. The mark is the fifth-best at OSU.
Â
Molly Latincsics paced an up-and-down weekend for the typically-excellent distance team. The newcomer posted a 34:24.52 in her first-ever 10,000 meters, the third-best mark all-time for a Beaver.
Â
Kate Laurent improved OSU's no. 8 5K with a 16:22.12 and Maya Baechler continued her strong freshman campaign with a PB of 4:29.58 in the 1,500 meters. Eimy Martinez and Emily Foote also recorded personal bests in the 5,000 meters.
Â
"We were solid in the distance events. Decent weekend - some good performances, but I felt that we can be much better there. We will be much better in two weeks in front of the home crowd. I was really happy for Molly running a great mark in the 10k. That was huge," Quintana said.
Â
UP NEXT
The Beavs will be back at home April 26-27, hosting the Oregon State High Performance Meet.
