Beavs Fall to Irish, Lady Vols on Saturday
February 24, 2024 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team dropped its two-game set on Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, falling to Notre Dame and fifth-ranked Tennessee.
Game 1: Notre Dame 8, Oregon State 2
The Fighting Irish plated all eight of their runs in the final four frames on their way to defeating Oregon State by a six-run margin in the first game of the day. Eliana Gottlieb got the Beavers on the board first with a no-doubt home run to right field in the first frame before Notre Dame responded. Trying to get back in it, Paige Doerr drove in Maddy Clark to slice the deficit to 4-2 before the Irish closed it with their last four.
Ellie Garcia was charged with the loss where she allowed four runs, six hits and walked two across 5.0 frames. Logan Hulon (1.1) and Sarah Haendiges (0.2) pitched the remainder in relief.
Maddy Clark, Paige Doerr and Grace Messmer all collected a pair of hits for the Beavers. Doerr and Gottlieb were credited in with bringing the OSU runs across.
Game 2: No. 5 Tennessee 6, Oregon State 1
Abby Doerr's RBI single to short in the fifth that brought Clark home cut the Lady Vols' lead in half but that was the closest they came as fifth-ranked Tennessee plated four in the last two frames to spoil OSU's upset bid in the late game.
Lici Campbell, Clark, Abby Doerr and Kiki Escobar all collected a hit for the Beaver offense.
Haendiges threw the game's entirety, allowing nine hits, six runs, fanned two and walked two.
Oregon State will close action in Cathedral City with a matchup against Northwestern tomorrow morning. First pitch against the Wildcats is set for 9 a.m. and can be seen on FloSoftball.
