Beavers Draw With Dons

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's soccer team battled San Francisco to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field.
Sergi Solans scored for the Beavers, leveling things up in the 72nd minute, after the Dons had found the net in the first half. Solans' tally was his 12th of the season, setting the Oregon State record for goals by a freshman and moving him into a tie for sixth on the Beavers single-season goals list. Pere Belmonte record an assist on the goal, his second of the season.
As a team, Oregon State out-shot San Francisco 16-9, and had eight corner kicks compared to the Dons' one.
Ellis Spikner fizzed a shot just wide just wide from distance in the 12th minute. San Francisco earned a penalty kick in the 18th. Gandhi Cruz saved the initial attempt, but the Dons were able to head home the rebound to take an early lead.
Spikner came close to evening the score in the 37th, missing just wide off a nice piece of build-up play down the left wing. It was Spikner again in the 40th, as he forced the San Francisco keeper to make an impressive reaction save from close range.
Jacob Huth had the Beavers first scoring chance of the second half, as he came close to tipping one home at the far post. Cruz made back-to-back saves in the 60th minute to keep the Beavers within striking distance.
Dante Williams forced a save with a header minutes later, as Oregon State looked to break down a resolute San Francisco back line. Solans leveled the score with less than 20 minutes to play, tapping the ball into the net from five yards out.
Oregon State pressed forward in the waning phases of the match, and a trio of Beavers nearly go on the end of an Enzo Newman cross in the dying moments of the game, but OSU was unable to go in front as the two sides split the points.
The Beavers will host their final home match of the regular season on Wednesday, when Bowling Green visits Lorenz Field.
